The Cambridge Audio SLA25 gave us high hopes, which were slightly deflated due to a somewhat bland sound

This is just an addition to the original review. I am now using the Van den Hul CS122 hybrid for speaker cables and the Tacima mains conditioner. The speakers sound very clean indeed. The great thing is that I can now play my flac files (I have a large collection stored on an external hard drive) using Songbird through the USB connection provided by the speakers and the sound is very nice indeed. I use the Wireworld ultraviolet USB cable. My conclusion is that if you use a good quality source (for cds I use the Marantz cd6003) and good cables these speakers do punch much above their weight. For an outlay of 550-600 quid, one has a very nice mini system.

I have just got these speakers for listening to piano music while I work on my computer. I think they are really excellent for the price atleast for classical music. I am an audiophile who has a fairly high end system. What I look for in reproduction is that the sound should be natural and musical. These speakers have that character. I have just ordered the Van den Hul CS122 hybrid and they should improve the sound even further. The reviewers for What Hi Fi seem to like a more in your face analytical sound which is why they gave a four star rating to the Marantz Pearl lite SACD player whose sound I like. So it appears to be a matter of subjective preference what type of sound one likes.
