Best tablet £300+, Awards 2012. It might not look very different, but the new iPad is undeniably better than the iPad 2, and that makes it the best tablet by a mile

I hope they can give more option for more storage, such as using SSD which become popular and start to become cheaper.

Other manufacturer such as Samsung also produce good Galaxy tab, which is innovative now

More importantly you can't watch video WHF website either!!

Yes, I know, unfortunately our current video player is Flash so doesn't work on iOS devices, but we have a new player in the works which we hope to install soon. FYI, the Awards section of the website already uses the new player, so those videos do work.

I find this review a little bias. You have given this product 5 stars even though you managed to uncover some negatives.

Size virtually negligible difference not a problem.

But the size difference and battery charge time is part of the same negative point.

Just the screen res is amazing. But still no 16:9

Poor storage memory in terms of the capability of the 1080p videos it can play.

and for me price is an issue a little bit too. Yes it's a premium product but as proven Samsung and others they have products ready and coming that will have advancements that even Apple may have hard time keeping up with.

Their much championed retina display idea is giving them headaches u can tell rescaling, upscaling, downscaling cuz they chose to make up their own standard rather then the industry standard. Apple are making thier product in my opinion less accessible by going down this path like sony did alot in the wrong way with copyprotecting defenses and its a slippery slope that cud end badly.

With all these negative points how can 5 stars be justified?

"I find this review a little bias. You have given this product 5 stars even though you managed to uncover some negatives."

The star rating allows for an easy comparison with other competing tablets. Few (any?) other tablets on the market offer the complete feature set available here (software, hardware, ecosystem etc). A product can have shortcomings whilst still being the best on the market.

"Size virtually negligible difference not a problem.

But the size difference and battery charge time is part of the same negative point."

Well, it is a negative that the product is heavier and thicker. But it's not necessarily such a negative that the product should lose a star - especially when the actual difference in size and weight is negligible.

"Just the screen res is amazing. But still no 16:9"

And it "still" never will be, even in years to come. 16:9 works great for films, but no other content suits this aspect ratio. Other 16:9 tablets have been launched and they haven't been successful, so the market has been fairly conclusive about what it wants here.

"Poor storage memory in terms of the capability of the 1080p videos it can play."

More memory would have been nicer, but again, what are we comparing it to? How many other tablets on the market offer more than 64GB at attractive price points? Plus, iTunes-purchased movies can be downloaded on demand rather than stored on the device permanently. Ripped movies can be transferred from a computer using WiFi sync when needed. The competition hasn't come up with anything better in this regard, so again the 5-star rating seems to hold.

"and for me price is an issue a little bit too. Yes it's a premium product but as proven Samsung and others they have products ready and coming that will have advancements that even Apple may have hard time keeping up with."

Please do list these competing devices at more competitive price points that I can buy now that offer the same feature set! As for that age old 'the products are coming...'... we heard that for years about the iPod touch killers and still no other manufacturer has launched anything quite like it that has resonated well with consumers. This review is about comparing the product with what's available here and now, not something that only exists on a powerpoint slide and promised as 'coming soon.'

"Their much championed retina display idea is giving them headaches u can tell rescaling, upscaling, downscaling cuz they chose to make up their own standard rather then the industry standard. What headaches? Text and image resources upscale automatically - Apple has taken care of that with the SDK. The only thing app developers have had to update are their own image files (textures, backgrounds etc) to take advantage of the higher resolution. But even if they don't, older apps still work, so what exactly is "less accessible" about having a higher screen resolution, and how is this in any way similar to Sony's proprietary DRM measures which prevented content playing on devices?

"With all these negative points how can 5 stars be justified?"

The defence rests.

Because it's an Apple, and Apple manufacture the best electronic devices and computers in the world, that's why. And always have done btw ...

No product is perfect, and no, we don't think the few criticisms we made we're sufficient to dock a star.

The Ipad3 ispoor when it comes to web browsing. Images are downsampled when over 1024 pixels - so for example a 15.1Mp image ( 4752x3168 ) gets downsampled to 1188x792. Probably not the result people were expecting, and a major letdown for some I imagine.

It would appear that while the Ipad3 games have a higher res and sharper images, games on Tegra3 have more and better visual effects. Effects present on Tegra3 versions are not present on Ipad3 versions.

Overall games seem to show the Ipad3 being around the same speed as the Ipad 2 (double the resolution). However the idea of seeing xbox/ps3 quality games on an Ipad3 is wishful thinking - theres not the bandwidth available - even when just upscaling.

The lack of joysticks/buttons, and the 100ms input lag that plagues all touchscreens - make all tablets unsuitable as a serious gaming device.

I'd suggest a 1080p video looks better in native resolution than upscaled to 1536. The more you upscale the blockier it will get. This will also be exacerbated by videos that have a lower bitrate. If the detail is not present in the source you cant magically add it.

I would also add that the Tegra3 CPU has 3x the CPU power of A5X and most tasks use CPU power - not GPU. The Asus Infinity TF700 with its quadcore and 1080p screen might be the first device to offer a bit of both - as well might the Ipad4 of course!

".....but is actually fatter and heavier than the iPad 2...."

0.6 mm thicker.

Can anyone actually tell it's thicker, without reading the spec. ?

.

Not really, the difference is negligible.

The price is wrong - should be £49.99!
