Some of the best-known names in consumer electronics are getting together to set a new industry standard for the wireless distribution of high-definition TV content. And they're planning on having the standard, based around the Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI), signed, sealed and delivered by the end of this year.

Hitachi, Samsung, Sharp and Sony have joined forces with Israel-based semiconductor and wireless specialists Amimon  and Motorola to develop the standard, which will cover multiroom audio, video and control connectivity without wires.

The group says that "A key ingredient of WHDI technology is a revolutionary video-modem that operates in the 5GHz unlicensed band to enable robust wireless delivery of uncompressed HD video (including 1080p).

"WHDI allows secure, encrypted HD video delivery through multiple rooms and other potential signal obstructions, such as people and furniture, while maintaining superb quality and robustness with less than one-millisecond latency."

The 'special interest group' formed by the companies will work "to enhance the current WHDI technology to enable wireless streaming of uncompressed HD video and audio between devices such as LCD and plasma HDTVs, multimedia projectors, AV receivers, DVD and BD players, set-top boxes, game consoles, and PCs."

The new standard aims to ensure that devices from different companies will simply and directly connect to one another, and operate together seamlessly – just as the HDMI standard theoretically does for wired connections.

thank god, finally an end to all those dubious cable reviews.

Clare - tell us more, will there be a review?

I've seen the Aminon system in action - pretty impressive stuff, albeit in prototype form....
