The world wide web: did you know?
There are some fascinating facts coming out of the Intellect Consumer Electronics Conference in London. Dave Tansley of Deloitte Consulting has just come up with the following nuggets of information:
* As of December 2008, of the 13 million music tracks online just 52,000 tunes (0.4%) accounted for 80 per cent of downloads.
* Around 75 per cent of music available for download has never been bought by anyone. It's just sitting there costing hosts money to be on a server.
* YouTube's hosting costs outstrip revenue: it's estimated bandwidth provision costs for the service are $1m a day and growing!
* The BBC iPlayer uses 60 per cent of the UK's web capacity. And if Lovefilm moved from mail distribution to online, the infrastructure could collapse.
