Sony will bundle the 3D Blu-ray of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland with all its current Bravia TVs in the run-up to Christmas.

The deal between Sony and The Walt Disney Company will also see the two firms collaborate on the promotion and marketing of 3D devices and content.

"We are excited to team up with Sony on 3D offerings and to offer consumers their first chance to experience one of 2010's top 3D films in their own homes," says Anthony Peet, Disney's vice-president of home entertainment in the UK.

Anyone who buys a Sony Bravia 3D TV in the pre-Christmas period will have the choice of Alice in Wonderland or Bolt on 3D Blu-ray.

The offer will be backed by a major TV, print and online advertising campaign.

• In a separate development, Panasonic has confirmed it will exclusively bundle the 3D Blu-ray of Avatar with its kit before Christmas. No exact dates/details yet.

From the beginning I had serious doubts that blu-ray would ever be able to equal the popularity of DVD's. Even less in times that internet has become the main competitor. The whole 3D-hype is nothing more than another trial to boost the sales again, I'm pretty sure. Who has really been waiting for this technology anyhow? The fact that both Sony & Pana 'offer' 3D blurays for free now proofs once again that the numbers are not really what they expected, and it needs another push.

How not to promote 3D TV part 2 - make each of the very few 3D titles available only as part of a bundle with an expensive piece of hardware.

Wow - how *not* to promote your 3D TV: package in a film that was promoted to '3D' in post-production and is generally regarded as a substandard example of the format.
