Nokia to sue Apple over patent infringements on the iPhone

Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, has filed a lawsuit against Apple for infringing patents on mobile phone technology for the iPhone.
The ten alleged patent infringements involve wireless data, speech coding, security, and encryption. Nokia said that it had agreements with around 40 firms allowing them to use certain innovations but that Apple had no such agreement.
"The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia.
He added that during the last two decades, Nokia had invested approximately £36.2bn on research and development.
The action has been filed in the Federal District Court in Delaware. Apple's shares are said to have dipped after the news broke.

m.j., i refer you to TobesEtc's last post...
i meant to say in my original post "smart phones" i know nokia sell millions of phones around the world .
but apple caught everyone off guard ,,and took the user experience way beyond what nokia and the rest were capable of , my question would be why has it taken over two years for nokia to sue ?
co-incidently
the same week nokia announced a drop in sales and profits and apple quite the opposite !
To comment on MJ's point that "apple are selling lots of phones...", let's put that into context with Nokia.
Nokia sold 93 million devices in Q1/09, that's about one million a day or more than Blackberry, Apple, HTC and Fujitsu combined (placed 2-5 in the smartphone sales league table).
I'd guess that Nokia must be at least a little "innovative", "appealing" and maybe even fairly well "designed". IMHO ;o)
I think Nokia sell rather more phones than Apple, m.j...
Let Nokia prove their claim. If they can apple must pay for what they use. No matter how great the product, anything else is theft - pure and simple.
quite right Mr Piano.
If Apple are using Nokia innovations and not observing patents properly then all good luck to Nokia.
hope Apple wins ,long live Apple and the i phone. best phone ever designed
apple are selling lots of phones booo hooo ,lets sue them for being innovative , and more appealing, and better designed waaaa waaa
Ooh, cool...
