Seven top music download sites are putting their weight behind a new "MP3 compatible" campaign launched by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

The ERA devised the logo, which makes it clear that MP3 files can be played on any PC, Mac or portable digital music device, and hopes the initiative will help consumers identify legal download sites.

So far HMV, Woolworths, 7digital, Digitalstores, Tescodigital, Tunetribe and Play.com have signed up to the scheme, which aims to raise the profile of the open MP3 music format.

The British record industry's trade association, the BPI, is also backing the scheme.

I hope this goes further. It would be good to see DRM taken account of and what bit rates are used.
