JAPAN NEWS: Pioneer finally pulls the plug on LaserDisc
The company, which launched its first consumer LD machine no less than 29 years ago, says it's now becoming increasingly difficult to source parts to make the players, and so it's being forced to terminate production.
A total of 3000 more machines will be made, adding to the 9.5m LD players it's sold worldwide – giving it more than half the total world sales.
Four Pioneer players are still on sale in Japan: the DVL-919 DVD/LD combi (pictured), the CLD-R5 LD/CD machine, and two karaoke units, the DVK-900 and DVL-K88.
Pioneer says it will "maintain the spare parts required to restore the normal functions of Pioneer LD players" for some time to come.
