IFA 2012: LG goes head-to-head with Samsung in TV tech war

Samsung is not the only company here at IFA calling the shots in the TV tech war: LG too is gearing up for battle with a raft of technology highlights.

It too has what it decribes as "the world's largest and slimmest 55in OLED TV – Samsung might argue about that – and is also showing off its 84in Ultra Definition (UD) 3D TV, shown below.

We know Samsung already plans to bring the "most advanced commercial OLED TV" to market in the second half of this year for €9000 (£7200).

The LG 55EM960 is just 4mm thick and weighs 10kg. It uses both LG's 4-Color Pixels – adding white to the usual array of red, green and blue – and the company's Color Refiner, which is said to improve colour rendition when the set is viewed off-axis.

It also comes equipped with Cinema 3D and smart TV capabilities, as you'd expect.

As if to emphasise the point, visitors to the LG stand at IFA are greeted by a dedicated OLED zone where they can experience the technology for themselves.

That's not all. You can also see the Korean firm's 84in UD 3D TV which delivers 8 million pixels and four times the resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) of existing Full HD panels, thanks to LG's advanced Triple XD engine and the Resolution Upscaler Plus.

A 2.2 speaker system delivers "rich and deep sound", adds LG.

And don't forget Sony has its own take on all this too, with the launch yesterday of its €25,000 Bravia KD-84X9005 4K TV, due out this December

"improve colour rendition when the set is viewed off axis" - OLED is just like LCD in this respect and very annoying for those who have a normal house where people sit in different positions.

When OLED was touted however they said 180 degree viewing angles- a lie as this was never the case.

What about the popy colours and lifespan too?

samsung & lg are responsible for quality seriously dropping regarding the tv market, with this personal mine is bigg..,i mean um, thinner than yours tug-of-war. While flooding every elec. superstore with low quality entry level tvs. I know these pieces are incredible, but has anybody seen the average £500 46/47in? lcd tvs? They look like bigger versions of £70 pc monitors, the build quality is deplorable. & for the likes of tosh, pana they are being forced to compete with similarly built units.Sony are trying to keep build q. for which they are known,(exept for the 1 made from credit card plastic) but charging for the extra quality...but i reckon this will all be a moot point in 3-5 yrs as samsung & lg have so much of a grip on the tv market, its hard to see any other outcome, but them both completely dominating ensuring all others tv divisions demise.
