Denon DP-200USB

This is the £200 DP-200USB turntable from Denon, which – thanks to a built in phono stage and MP3 encoder – allows you to copy LPs and singles directly to USB memory sticks at the push of a button.

It can also deliver music to computers, portable hard drives or pocket players – in fact any storage device with USB connectivity.

The turntable comes complete with Trans Music Converter software for PCs, which allows editing and, via Audio Waveform Recoginition, Gracenote database lookup for information about the music.

There's Auto Track Divide, which senses the gaps between tracks, and a manual override, while the turntable also has conventional stereo analogue outputs in addition to the USB socket on the front panel.

The DP-200USB is available now, in a choice of black or silver.

200 for a Denon turntable with natty recording features? Yes please, just the ticket to play and convert the precious but redundant vinyl collection in the loft!

Until, that is, you find out the device has no phonos to connect to the Hi-Fi. Surely a lost opportunity here for what must only cost a few more quid in parts to include.

Worse, there is no option to record in lossless formats, e.g. WAV, FLAC, APE, etc., just lossy and rubbish mp3s.

Take it or leave it? I'll leave it, sadly. I can't be alone in this predicament, surely.
