Shows such as Eastenders, Heroes and Top Gear will soon be streamed live online at the same time as they're broadcast on TV.

The BBC has announced that BBC One and BBC Two will join other BBC channels in streaming live online from November 22nd.

BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC News are already broadcast on their channel websites, while content from the main channels is currently available on the iPlayer.

All programmes from the flagship channels will be available on the iPlayer service for a week after they're broadcast live.

"From 27 November licence fee payers will be able to watch BBC programmes live wherever they are in the UK on their computers, mobile phones and other portable devices," says Director of BBC Vision, Jana Bennett.

According to media watchdog Ofcom, the number of people watching TV on the internet has doubled in the last 12 months.

BBC live streaming runs fine on Firefox on the Macs in the office, as it does on the PCs here at home.

Couldn't agree more. What's the betting you need a specific version of IE to watch the broadcast content spoken about here, as well.

A software upgrade to allow content to be selected and shown on an apple TV would be a nice addition also.

Given that the current streaming services run in a standard web browser, psj, I guess the new ones will be fine on your PS3.

Great, but when will they sort out downloads of programmes for the Mac?

Just wondering whether this will be able to be viewed on the Sony PS3 via the internet, as you can't currently watch the BBC iPlayer?
