iPad: iOS4 upgrade will cost you

Our sister site Stuff.tv is reporting that Apple plans to charge for the iOS4 upgrade for the iPad when it becomes available in a few months time.

iPad owners who are keen to get multitasking and folders, already introduced on the iPhone and latest iPod Touch, will have to wait until the autumn and then may have to pay for the privilege.

There are no details of how much Apple will charge for the upgrade, but our spies tell us it's expected to be in the region of £5.

iPod Touch owners have often had to pay for upgrades in the past, even if they were free on the iPhone, and now it seems Apple is applying a similar strategy to the iPad.

Apple has refused to confirm or deny the story, saying only: "We don't comment on rumour or speculation."

I have a website bookmarked that has links to all the iPod and iPhone updates and they're all free downloads. Consequently I've never paid to update my iPod Touch!

Yes, we know the iOS4 upgrade was free for latest iPod Touch owners, but earlier [non-iOS4] upgrades had to be paid for (I know, because I have a first-generation Touch and had to pay a fiver).

And no, we can't be "sure' iPad owners will get the next upgrade for free.

I think this article has got it all wrong. iOS4 is completely free for iPod touch - I upgraded mine. What I remember Apple once saying is that subsequent releases will need to be paid for.

I'm sure iPad owners will get it for free, unless there's a newer release of iOS4.

This article is silly. It was stated in the original iPad launch keynote as well as in the licence agreement that comes with the iPad that the next major version ie iOS4 will be free of charge.

see surely if the firmware/os is there to make the product better or do what it should have done in the first place it should be free

if not they should also guarantee that any future release will not require the update to allow it to work
