I'm giving you £800 for a new 40/42inch telly. What are you going to spend it on?

I'm giving you £800 for a new 40/42inch telly. What are you going to spend it on?

Okay I'm stumped.  Absolutely stumped. There's 3 TVs out there and they've each got there pros and cons.  I really have no idea what to get so what I'd really like to hear from is people who own the following and let me know what they're really like.

Sony KDL 40W4000:   It's more expensive then the other two but I know that this is a great telly and it looks good to.

Samsung LE40A656:  It looks stunning and would look equally stunning in my living room but I know that the Sony, although more expensive, has a better picture.

Panasonic TH42PZ80:  I haven't ruled out Plasma and my only concern is running costs as I've heard that Plasmas use up more electricity then LCDs.  Otherwise it's a great price and I know that blu rays are going to look stunning. Negatives is that it's nowhere near as attractive looking as the Sony and the Samsung.

A 32" one. 42" too big for my house.

Panasonic plasma though - stunning. And running costs are minimal.

But instead it just kept on raining

A dac upgrade- i'm not a tv fan.

More to the point,

plasma would be my choice, because of more natural colors- easier on the eye. As far as I know the extra power consumption of plasmas is yet another myth.

what about lifespan of plasmas? it's supposed to be smaller than lcd's lifespan. and plasma is a gas, wich theoretically could escape.Any user here living with a plasma for a few years? problems?

Well my Pany claims a life span of 100,000 hours...... You do the maths.

You don't have to worry about gas escaping...... well not unless you drop it and smash the screen.

No escaped gases here! Honestly, I swear.

As to problems on plasmas concerning life span etc, I've been here on this forum pretty much since the beginning and have yet to encounter bigger 'problems' with plasmas than image retention, which -apparently-is cured by simply playing a fast paced film.

Had mine for just under 3 years now - no issues at all and it gets used a lot, even for gaming

For an average user using a quality plasma ,there shouldn't be any problems.

I remember after I watched the Wimbledon final on my 37PX80 which was about 4 hours long the BBC Sport icon was burnt in but it had disappeared within half an hour or so of normal viewing.

Clearly this was image retention, not screen burn. Screen burn does not disappear.

For an average user using a quality plasma with some caution, i.e. not as a computer display, not carelessly leaving the plasma on displaying a still screen for more than an hour, there shouldn't be any problems.

I've fallen asleep playing an Xbox game several times - 8 hours later I've woken up and seen the exact same game screen I fell asleep to still active (the TV screensaver hasn't kicked in as the game was still active). No screenburn, nothing. Image retention which is rectified by playing standard TV for a few seconds, that's it.

Please don't spread rumours about how careful you have to be with plasma when they're not true!

Comet or Currys, I Can't remember which, are knocking out the Sony 40V4000 with a Blu-Ray player (Sony, but don't know the model) for £700.

My Parents have just bought it.
A/V: Sony KDL-V40A12U & BDP-S350, BT Vision, Onkyo TX-SR875, B&W MT-30 7.1, QED audio cables, Russ Andrews power cables.

Hi-Fi: Arcam CD72T & A65+, B&W 602S3, Partington stands, Grado SR125, Kimber I/Cs, QED speaker cables, Russ Andrews power cables.

Don't intend to. Quite on the contrary: you'll see that my other posts on my thread are more steered towards myth busting, than myth creating.
As I stated before though, my knowledge on flat tvs isn't much more than having experienced that plasma give a more natural image and basically all the problems are myths and half myths.
Will edit my post to prevent further confusion.
