My "i can't afford to be in this game" system
Hi! Spent all of yesterday perving on all your hifi's, so thought i'd get involved!
Like most people, i've been on a bit of journey, i'll try not to bore you too much...Started off with an old 80's Toshiba (or Technics? can't remember) amp and matching turntable which i liberated off my brother, who had liberated it from a neighbour about 10 years earlier. speaker wise, a few years earlier we did a clear out of a club and i nabbed a lonsome pair of tannoy sixes that happened to be there unclaimed. source wise it was either vinyl or nasty mp3 from my xbox or ipod. i loved this system, even though it sounded dirty and only 1 speaker had a working crossover.... more to point because it didn't cost me anything. cabling wise it was too random and cheap to mention!
then i started working in a music shop, and the owner had a pair of mission freedom floor standers (the ones with the 1 main driver and the tweeter above) sitting in boxes not doing anything. so i nagged him until he sold them to me. took me a few months, but i got there. think i paid £100 for those. not sure if he ripped me off or not, i was just chuffed to have some big whomping speakers.
luckily, the dudes who owned the music shop were in school with the manager of my local audio t (or audio excellence as it was then), so i got to know them, and started making regular perv missions to their shop, and probably became a bit of a nuisnace! it worked out pretty sweet though, as my first "purchase" from them was a nad c521 cd player, which was sold to me under the terms "it turned up a few years ago from somewhere, been sitting in the corner of the workshop since, don't even think it works". so, i got it for nowt. it worked, and is still in my system today.
Around this time, my amp was getting old(er) and tierd, so time for an upgrade. i rang up the guy i knew, said i wanted a new amp and that i'm poor so didn't want to spend much money. he said "we've got a cyrus 3 come in second hand, £100". sold! this kind of sets the tone for most of my purchases, i very rarely choose anything, just tend to go with whatever they have around. i know this isn't the best approach, but i don't have the kind of budget a lot of people have for this kind of thing!
then it was time for my turntable to die. it was a sad day for the humster. made a phone call, they had a Pro-Ject Genie III on a trade in, so it was done. as with anything i buy, not the best, but it looks the bomb to the untrained eye
then i found out the same guy who i got the missions off, had a kef psw1000 sub, sitting in a box, doing nothing. this one took me a bit longer to blag off him.. but he broke, eventually. althought it's not a great sub, by any stretch of the imagination, it certainly rocked my boat at the time.
then i left the country for 6 months and did a dive master internship in ibiza. so lived in ipod with shure e2 in ears land. occasionally i'd treat myself with an hour or 2 with my sennheiser hd25's. rough.
about 1.5 years ago just after i got back, while we were mixing a few songs in my mates studio, his amp died. we were in a pinch, so i lent him my cyrus 3 to get us through the session. he loved the honesty (i'll probably get shot down for this, but compared to what he was using, it was honest!) of the cyrus 3, and didn't want to give it back. ever the oppertunist, i sold it to him, and put the money to put down on something better. i spoke to the chap in audio t, i said "i really like the cyrus 3, but i want to get something better". to which he replied "well, get a better cyrus then". sorted. they had a mint condition (the remote was still sealed in the bag) cyrus 6vs come in on a trade in, so we sorted out a "i'm skint" payment plan and it was done. the difference was remarkable. i love the simplicity of cyrus, no eq controls, just volume. This also posed another problem, the cyrus 6 is an all line level amp, so had to get a phono amp. went for the cheapy pro-ject one in the end to get me going, with a view to upgrade to something better at some point. (that point hasn't arrived yet by the way...)
the next upgrade (debateable i suppose), is a similar story to the missions/kef. started working full time for a sound company (which 2 other guys very much into hifi, which i love and will be my downfall at the same time) and one of the boys had a pair of Kef Q55 floor standers that he was getting rid of. so i sold the missions to mate with a cheapy cambridge audio amp that i'd aquired from somewhere and got the kef's.
then i moved house, and my system went into a much bigger room. this made bags of difference, sounded like a different system as it had room to breath.
then came my first posh tele, went for a Samsung ue405500 (i think), which i love, although i don't get to use it that often (stupid eastenders). to go with it i got a cheaper than cheap blu ray player, which although is uber cheap and uber nasty, seems to do the job (one of the many things to get this year!) . i also got a Pro-Ject DAC to convert the optical signal to analogue to plug into the Cyrus. that's one gripe i have, alot of the av stuff just seems to have digital outs, which is problematic for us analogue two channelers.
since then i've been dreaming of subs! my boss in work has a Rel Strata, which almost made me soil my pants, and i've had my other collegues Rel q50 on loan for the last few weeks, which has totally blown my mind. started watching a lot more films since i've had it on loan, the extra low end just makes me giggle.
so, now i've got to give the Rel back. the other day, this made me a bit depressed. how could i go back to my kef with ropey volume pot? so, after getting incredibly frustrated trying to spend a £20 voucher in one of those 'the range' shops (or as i like to call them, hell) i lost my temper, went to audio t and put a deposit down on a second hand Rel T7 that a guy in the shop is selling. i had been working myself up to, debating it over christmas, but that shopping trip was the straw that broke the camels back. so i pick that up in a few weeks! winner!
and that's it so far! sorry if i bored you, i really didn't intend on typing this much. but i'm not back in work till monday, and had some time to kill......
Plans for 2013: sort out my cables. it's a mish mash of cheap and cheaper stuff back there. apart from i got some black rhodium disco speaker cable at some point, maybe during the cyrus 3 to 6 changeover. was looking at the black rhodium interconnects the other day, will eventually replace with those over time. i'd love to get a proper cabinet/stand, i love the justracks stuff, just can't face spending that kind of money (that and i don't have it). that and build a new media machine with a micro atx case, should sit nicely somewhere and will be way better than the gigantic case i currently have (cunningly out of shot behind the left speaker). and a new blu ray player. i can get the yamaha ones at trade through work, so that seems a logical choice.
further notes: under the turntable there is normally a granite chopping board, which has since been moved to accomodate the rel in the corner, as it is enormous. when i give the rel back the granite will go back under it. was thinking maybe 2 granite boards, with some cut in half squash balls bettween them? does that stuff work? i wanted to use jelly, but don't think that'll be practical. the kef sub isn't plugged in. as you'll see, it's not the cleanest setup, but it does me good.also worth mentioning, i have no neighbours, which is great. but i also have a hollow wood floor, which isn't great. the louder it gets, the muddier it gets!
i appologise for any bad spelling and or grammar. and if the picture doesn't work, i'll be gutted.
