Office System

Source:Mac Mini

Pre-amp/headphone amp: NuForce Icon HDP,

Speakers/headphones: Adam A7x, Audio Technica ATH-AD900x

The Adams are a bit of overkill for this space, but the bass shelving means they work pretty well. As this is where I work this is where I do most of my music listening and I'm finding this setup to be a very satisfying allrounder.

Living Room

Fostex PM0.4n. DA conversion duties handled by a Fiio a D03K being fed by an Apple TV. Controlled using the Apple control app on my iPhone. Cheap but chearful. Great sound for the price. Convenient, although the microwave seems to cause network dropouts for the ATV. Good levels of detail, soundstaging and separation. Bass is surprisingly good for the size of the speakers. Plus the Fostex come in white to match my TV. Note the audiophile sponge padding on the corners of the furniture and audiophile locks. Also helps to protect clumsy toddlers as well as the DVD player and Wii, etc. hidden away in the cabinet.

Stuff.

Hi what are the cable connections you use, from your Mac to the Nuforce Icon?

And also from the Nuforce to the A7X's?

Do you think you need a subwoofer or happy with the bass of the A7X's?

Cheers

I use optical from my Mac. Just the cheapest I could find in the store. I've never experiemented with more expensive optical cables. I'd try USB, but all of my USB ports are taken up with other devices. From the HDP I use Neo (by Oyaide) d + RCA class S

http://www.neo-w.com/english/d-rca-series.html

I plan to eventually move them to my living room. At which point I will try to get something like an M-DAC or Pioneer U-05 so that I can have a remote to control the volume without getting up off the couch, as well as balanced connections which are supposed to be superior (or maybe it is just the extra volume because balanced outputs tend to be around 4v rather than the normal 2v, and volume matching would reveal them to be similar).

My office is tiny, so they have way too much bass for this room (thank god for the shelving). I guess it depends on how much bass you want and the room you have them in. I think these have plenty of bass even for my living room. I live in a pretty small apartment, but they'd work even in rooms that are a bit bigger. Due to the size and woofer size, they remind me a little bit of my B&W 685s that I used to own in terms of scale and the ability to work in larger rooms

I don't think I'd need a sub with them. Despite the fact that I listen to a lot of electronic music, there are a only few tracks where I can tell that they are just missing the very lowest octaves. Then again, I'm not a complete bass-head. I just like to know what is hapening in the sub-bass region. I don't need it to be shaking pictures off my neighbours walls. I'd be interested to see how they work with action movies when set up in a living room.

I'll get pics up eventually. For some reason I seem to be going from newest to oldest.

Here's a preliminary shot. The sub and other speaker are out of shot to the left. The TV is sitting on the RZ-1.

The bedroom system is a bit hard to shoot and I need to tidy up the bedroom before I can try to get a decent shot.
