I have inherited hi-fi equipment but don't know what to do with it
Dear All
I have inherited the equipment listed below, plus a lot of wires and remotes to go with it.
I do not have the space or know how to use it so will likely attempt to sell it so I can buy a micro hi-fi system - that will require more research but I have bought March and April issue of What Hi-Fi and have a good idea of what I will get.
I wrote down what details I could. If you would be so kind could I ask for your thoughts on whether there is value to any of the following:
Hitachi HMA-8500 MKII (Power Amp)
Hitachi HCA-8500 MKII (Control Amp)
Nakamichi DR-8 (Take Deck)
Yamaha DSP AX757 SE (?)
Acoustic Solutions SP111 (DAB Tuner)
Meridian 208 (Disc Player)
Cyrus 8 (Integrated Amp?)
B&W DM601 S3
Rel Strata Sub-Bass System
There are also some very large speakers which were homemade. The drivers were purchased and the speaker built based on a design sheet.
This is essentially what they are: http://www.lowtherloudspeakers.com/fid-acad.html
Apologies in advance if this is not the done thing on this forum but this is my first message and I no very little about hi-fi equipment.
There is certainly value to everything in your list, search eBay and you will see what the various items can be expected to go for.
Your own suggestion of Meridian CDP and Cyrus amp is missing a preamp as the Cyrus is a power amp only. It is actually very difficult to imagine how all that lot was connected together in the first place since there is one preamp, two power amps and a home cinema receiver amp (the Yamaha).
Agreed...selling on ebay is very easy - just make sure you sell each item individually and take the time to list them as accurately as possible with photos etc.
However, in amongst it all you could have the makings of a pretty decent system. So if you've got a bit of time (say half an hour) you might be surprised how good it sounds...
My suggestion would be to get some sounds going for you would be to
1. Take the B+W speakers, Cyrus Amp (assuming it is a Cyrus 8 integrated, you'll know cos this will have a volume knob on the front) and the Meridian CD player. Make sure you have a power cable for each of the boxes, and that when you plug them in some kind of standby light comes on.
2. Connect the speakers to the amp with some speaker cable. Make sure you connect a red terminal on the amp to a red on the speaker.
3. Connect the amp to the CD player with some RCA Interconnects (you'll need a pair, one for the left channel one for right). The inputs on the amp will be labelled, so should be clear. If you get confused then Cyrus website has diagrams I think for helping, but all the plugs on the back are labelled.
4. Connect amp and cd player to the mains. Turn it on, and see if any music comes out when you play a CD!
Any questions let us know, it's not too tricky really.
PS- nearly forgot to say, it's also very easy to connect your ipod to the Cyrus amp. See if the thing works first, then you'll just need a headphone-to-rca cable that should only cost a couple of quid. If that works for you, then you can look at getting more expensive docks and such like, but sounds like you need to just check it all works first.
Hi
the Meridian 208 is a cd player AND a preamp. I have one and use it with active speakers. Sould work well with the Cyrus.
The 208 cost about $4500 20 years ago, should be worth $700 at least now. Pity to give it away: it's better than most
Dear all, thank you for the input.
I have yet to go through all the wires and plugs to get the equipment up and running. Luckily all the manuals are present.
I am toying with the idea of selling it to raise funds for a Denon mini hifi and Q2010 speakers, as these will fit the small space I have available.

I thought I should add my intention is to buy this:

I will run this with Q 2010 speakers due to lack of space.
However, if it will produce a better sound I could use the Meridian 208 and Cyrus 8. Then it would be useful to know how I can connect my ipod to the amplifier and get a good sound from it, as the Cyrus 8 lacks a USB connection.
All my CDs are recorded to the ipod in apple lossless format.
