i've changed broadband, now need to hook up my AEX again..
ok i've been using a mobile broadband modem which plugs into my laptop via usb, my laptop recognises this as a dial-up connection and so up to now i've been able to connect my laptop wirelessly to the airport express.
but now i've got a modem/wireless router getting unlimited 8meg broadband over my phone line, i can't wirelessly connect to the AEX and the new router at the same time.
the router is in the hall while the AEX is behind the tv in my lounge.
do i need to get a long length of phone cable (ethernet?) and move the router behind the tv, and then connect the AEX to it?
or can i somehow connect the AEX to the router wirelessly? with laptop also connected wirelessly to router?
thanks...
i didn't think it would be so easy..
it seems like my AEX is connected to the router, stable green light.
and my laptop is connected to the router.
but i can't seem to stream from itunes, and when i open airfoil it's not giving me the option of using the AEX.
i presume that i connect the laptop to the router and not the AEX right?
Yes. It's probably worth turning the router and modem off, waiting 30 seconds, them turning on again.
na, no joy, i'm not able for this at the mo, (had a few too many last night)
i'll try and sort it tmw, thanks jd..
does anyone know if the airport express is WPS (wifi protected set-up) enabled?
I had to google WPS. I have no idea. Sounds like a non-standard way of setting up networks and whilst it might be simple, it'll mean you'll get less help
Just had a look at the settings of my Airport Express. It's password protected. But I don't know if that's what you mean.
I have taken the Airport Express to the UK and used it with a cable internet connection at one of my relatives to set up a wireless network. It actually was quite easy. But I remember that I had to restart the cable modem to get it working.
There is an update to Airport utility (5.5.3) for both Mac and Windows which apparently solves an issue with the utility crashing during setup.
thanks guys, i've gotta pop out for a while, i'll try again when i get back.. really looking forward to it
ok here's what i've done...
removed airport utility, itunes, anything apple from my laptop.
reset the AEX.
selected a "home network" on my laptop, i presume this enables other trusted devices to connect? though it created a password, i don't know if that's a good thing?
so i'm going to start from scratch, reload the AEX set-up disc and go from there.
i may have some questions along the way
hmmm, my pc is connected wirelessly to my router, so it can't see airport, i presume i'll need to disconnect from the router in order for it to be able to find airport during a scan in airport utility?
Before installing anything I would update the Airport utility first. The latest version was released 2 days ago.
The utility will probably tell you that there's an update when you first use it after installing from disc.

It seems that removing "everything Apple" from your laptop is a bit excessive. I can't imagine that is the cause of setup problems. But the AEX can be a bit temperamental. When I installed it first time I did the setup through ethernet and not wireless. IIRC there is a special setting to enable the AEX to be set up wirelessly.
When I first set-up my Airport Extreme 802.11n base station it was 'found' wirelessly and Airport Utility came up automatically. I just followed the steps and set up WPA2 as prompted.
Subsequently (a long time later) I tried adding an AEX and this was impossible to access from my laptop (even with the firewall disabled) but took seconds to set up as a client on the existing network (from the Airport utility on the iMac).
Alas, the iTunes I wanted streamed into my hifi (via AEX) was on the laptop and not the iMac (also in different rooms), so I took the AEX back and bought a DAC and a 5 metre USB cable instead
That was all a few years ago and I now use AirPlay.
Initial set-up of the AEX, whilst connected with ethernet, is a tip I have come across a lot (WRT PCs not Macs). Worth trying.
thanks mark
it's now asking me (in setup in airport utility)
i want to create a new wireless network
i want to replace an existing base station or wireless router with AEX
i want airport express to join my current network
i guess the middle one?
ta..

edit... ok nearly sane

Reset the AEX by turning the power off and holding a paperclip in the reset button on the bottom of it *while turning the power on again*.
Then run the airport utility again, this time telling it to 'join existing network'. You'll need the same password you used to connect your laptop wirelessly. Job done (usually...)
