I've got some (daft) questions...
English

Hi there,

First post from me. I've recently ordered a new system - the first time I've bought hi-fi new, and the first time I've heard hi-fi above entry level.

Anyway, the main reason for posting is that while the hi-fi expert was with me I wanted to ask a number of questions, some of them daft, just to get a definitive answer to them. Thing is, being a younger fellow, he'd never owned a turntable and wasn't into vinyl, so he didn't know the answer to some of the questions, so I thought I'd ask them here. Which part of the forum would be the best place to ask them?

I'm thinking some really basic stuff, e.g. what's the relationship between damage to vinyl and damage to stylus? - I've always had the notion that you shouldn't play scratched records on a decent turntable because you'll knacker the stylus, but the man from the hi-fi shop seemed to think not. I thought here would be a good place to ask.

I currently have a old Rega Planar 2, Rotel RA820-BX amp, Arcam Alpha 7 CD player and Wharfedale Diamond speaker, all of which have served me really well for many years. I wanted to see how much difference the next level up could make, and finally managed to get an in-home demo of some new kit a couple of weeks ago. I was blown away. I ended up ordering the Rega RP3, Brio amp and Apollo CD player with Monitor Audio Silver RX6 speakers, as listening to them made me so happy, and really excited about rediscovering music I've known and got bored with. Just have to wait for them to make it all now...

It's quiet in here. Anyone out there can point me to the right part of the forum to ask my questions?

It's probably not something you want to make a habit of it but it'll depend on the size of the scratch to a certain extent, if it's the sort of thing that's going to make the needle jump then I'd avoid it definitely. A very light scratch may not even be audible so that shouldn't matter too much.

Hello btw.

Hi, thanks for your reply. That's pretty much the guideline I've gone by all these years, but would be good to get a definitive answer.

Which would be the best part of the forum for me to ask questions along these lines?

Thanks again.

There's a Turntables and LPs sub-forum in the Hi-Fi forum, that's probably a good place to start...
