Why Do I get audio/visual lag when recording

Hello!

I have been trying to record some game play footage from my Playstation 3 to my Sony RDR-HXD870 DVD recorder. For some reason, there is a delay between pressing the buttons on the Playstation controller and receiving visual feedback on screen, and it makes it virtually unplayable when trying to record action games. Does anyone know any way around this? I am using standard definition RCA (red, white, yellow) cables on input and out.

How is a DVD recorder different something like a Hauppauge HD PVR where it records without any delay. Obviously, the PVR records in High def, whereas mine is only standard def, but I don't see what this lag should occur.

Can anyone help me?
