Which 55" LED TV?

As far as I can tell there isn't too much to differentiate the below 5 TVs in terms of specification... does anyone have any views as to which is the best to go for as I'm getting a little bit lost?

Samsung UEF7000

Samsung UEF8000

Panasonic TXL55WT65

Panasonic TXL55DT65

LG 55LA860W

Many thanks

What's your budget? What about Sony?

The W905a is hard to grade,it is the best TV for gamers due to the low lag of 8ms..... even with motionflow impulse punched in it is still lower than on the Samsung F8000...at 33ms

I have to admit that the triluminous colour technology is not needed for the Rec 79 colour standard mastered Blu ray.....it is something for future viewing materials.

I still think the samsung panels are less risk with lack of uniformity than Sony's

In many ways the F8000 is the best allrounder and I am Sony fanboy.

Is there a reason you've decided specifically on an LED TV, rather than plasma?

Budget is £2.5k...the only reason I decided on LED rather than Plasma is that I read somewhere they use a lot less power and the picture is better but from that you can proably deduce I'm a bit of a novice.

I started looking a few months back and although Sony seemed to get great reviews the bezels were a lot wider than other makes and I like the look of something with a narrow bezel so ruled them out on that criteria alone.

LED lit LCD TVs use less power, yes. They're better than plasmas......don't think that's correct. I wouldn't say one technology is better than the other. Personally, I found plasmas delivering the most accurate and fluid pictures.

If I had 2.5k to spend on a tv, it'd be the the Panasonic TX-P55VT65B, by most accounts, the best 55" tv out there.

Check out the reviews.

Lounge: Panasonic TX-P50GT50 / Yamaha RX-A2020 / Panasonic DMP-BDT110 / Dali Zensor 3 / Dali Zensor Vokal / Mordaunt Short MS20i Pearl Edition / Roksan Radius 5.2 / WDTV My Book Live / Seagate Expansion / Sky HD Box

Agreed.  LED wouldn't even enter my mind.   If you are set on LED though check out the new Sony TVs, the 8 and 9 series.  I think they have the best LED pictures.

Home cinema system: Panasonic 50VT65 (THX calibrated), Pioneer Bdp-lx71, Pioneer Vsx-lx70, B&W FPM Series, B&W PV1.

Gadgets: iPad 4 and iPhone 4s.  Headphones: B&O H6.  Dab radio: Roberts Dreamtime.

Hello Turbo124,

Hmmm, two and a half grand .... I do have a few machines in mind, but you can help me reduce the number by answering a few more questions:

1. I notice that you list only 55" televisions. Is there some restriction on other sizes, might you consider a smaller size like 50", or could you consider a larger size like 60" or even 65"?  Depending on what TV you currently have, the new TV may seem very large initially but you soon get used to the larger size. So, is 55" the only size that you can have?

2. What will you be using your TV mainly for? For watching ordinary TV programmes (which I think is often overlooked by forum members and magazine reviewers alike), for watching DVDs and Blu-Rays, or for gaming? Give each activity a percentage of time spent on it.

By the way, plasmas use more power, though they are getting better, but I don't agree that LED pictures are necessarily better than plasmas. Without being dogmatic about either technology, I've seen good and bad examples of both. I happen to have plasmas, but I have seen some very good LEDs. It will be your machine, so it's what you like that counts, but  personally I'm not attracted to a very thin bezel. I think that it helps to have a bezel of about two or three centimetres, to frame the actual picture. But everyone's different, and it will be your TV!

RE: Which 55" LED TV?

Hi Son_of_SJ,

Thanks for your response. In answer to your questions:

1. 55" is the absolute maximum, I would consider slightly smaller but I've just moved into a new house and think 55" would work in the living room but no bigger.

2. I would say 60% normal TV, 30% films, 10% gaming.

Personally, I prefer the look of a thin bezel. Also, whilst my budget is 2.5k, if I don't need to spend that much based on my type of useage then of course I'll happily spend less! I would like something relatively future proof though... to the extent that's possible with TV's!

Thanks

RE: Which 55" LED TV?

Hello Turbo124,

Well, you have simplified things greatly! Since you will be gaming for 10% of the time, I would probably steer away from a plasma. I don't game and I've never had any image retention trouble with any of my plasmas, but I know of many people who have gamed with plasma TVs and been sorry. I don't really know too much about the incoming crop of LED TVs, but one that I do know of is an outgoing model from last year, the Samsung UE55ES8000. My sister-in-law has the 65" version and is is very, very good. When I visit them I usually end up watching the predecessor of this TV, the Samsung UE55D8000, because it's downstairs in their living room, and I'm very impressed with it. The one that I'm recommending, the Samsung UE55ES8000 is a generation later, and John Lewis and Richer Sounds still have it listed, for example here http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue55es8000-led-hd-1080p-3d-smart-tv-55-with-freeview-freesat-hd-and-voice-motion-control/p231554183. Unlike some other LEDs, I didn't notice that picture quality got worse at wide viewing angles. And look, even if you take the £55 installation charge, I've just saved you almost £700, with a five-year guarantee! I should really be asking for a 10% cut of the saving, as your agent .... If you put "Samsung UE55ES8000 review" into google, you will see reviews by John Archer at Techradar, by whathifi, by cnet, by TrustedReviews and by T3. The only thing that I don't like about it is that dratted stand! Enjoy!

RE: Which 55" LED TV?

I'm sorry but I would disagree. 10% of gaming is about an hour every day on an average. Any plasma can handle this.

Ah well, I myself don't game at all, so I was being cautious. I'll leave to you to recommend a plasma!

RE: Which 55" LED TV?

So far this year the best set I've seen is the pan VT65. It just looked the absolute business on bluray and standard def freeview.

as for the mention of the Samsung UE55ES8000 I think it's an awful tv, the motion is poor, the sound is naff and edge bleeding is horrific, the D8000 was a better tv and I didn't like that either lol this years F8000 is a lot better but the VT65 still wipes the floor with it.

but hey that's just my opinion

As soon as I can afford it, I'll be getting a Panasonic 65VT65.

We'll just have to disagree about the merits or demerits of the Samsung UE55ES8000. Most of the reviewers that I mentioned liked it very much, but that's just their opinions too.
