What is the minimum size 3D TV one needs to buy to appreciate 3d effect particularly watching live sports FAO Andy Clough

You'll get different views on this, but as far as I'm concerned, a 3D picture should take up your whole field of vision, so suits projectors more than TV's.

It's really down to the distance at which you view the screen: I've found that 3D works best if the screen more or less fills your field of vision, as you're then not distracted by 'real' 3D objects around it. Turning out the lights is an alternative, but really the bigger the screen the better for a convincing 3D effect. If you like that kind of thing...

I am not a big 3D fan. I have a 42" TV watching from a distance of 1.8-2metres away. I viewed a bit of the wimbledon finals, this is the first time I have tried to watch 3D in bright daylight conditions. I found the 3D to give a fish tank impression - i.e. inside the TV it was 3D but nothing was leaping out of the screen. Even sitting closer it still was not too impressive. I also found the flicker just off my field of vision from the active glasses distracting.

I closed the second blind, stopping the sunlight from entering the room and the 3D effect really came into effect and worked a treat. Even sat back in my original viewing position. As Andrew mentioned above watching 3D in a totally darkened room enhances the 3D effect tremendously.

But as it was Tennis I didn't watch much more.

I recorded the Wimbledon men's final in 3D but haven't watched it yet (been away). I'll have a look on my 40in Samsung tonight once the sun's gone down... and yes, I do know who won

I'd say for 1m distance 46" Screen and for 2m 55" screen - this is minimum.

I have a 46" screen and sit 2.2m away and it doesnt look good until im close up. sometimes things come out of the screen and it looks ok but from 80cm it looks so much better

For good 3D i would only suggest a projector and avoid Samsung C series as my 46c8000 suffers from crosstalk very badly during sky sports 3d broadcasts. BluRay is usually within tolerance.

I enjoy watching films in 3D but sports i prefer to watch them in 2D as all it does is increase depth in the tv

So that's 31 inches viewing distance before the picture on a 46 inch screen looks it's best?

Blimey, going by that measurement i'm gonna need a tv measuring 144" minimum ( does anyone make one? ). I have a feeling that may be massively ( dont know thats oxford english but hey what the heck ) out of my price range, not to mention it will block off my exit through the main living room door, looks like a projector may be the next upgrade.
