Sony tv timer

Simple question - how do I use the timer function on my Sony Bravia tv. I know how to use the sleep facility, I'm happy to say, but I can't work out how to get the tv to come on and go off at set times. I set the on time and off time, but it doesn't seem to do anything. The manual doesn't go into much detail on the subject. There must be something I'm not doing...
