Samsung 46" 3D - Olympics Opening Ceremony on BBC - problems
My nearly new Samsung 46"doesn't seem to be showing 3D images properly. I'm watching the Opening Ceremony and in 3D it looks like the camera is looking down at people's feet. This happened also on Wimbledon when the players' heads were cut off!
Any suggestions?
We did but thanks for taking the trouble to reply
Could be your TV is set to 'top and bottom' and the 3D signal is being broadcast as 'side by side', which is how it appears on my non-3D TV. You can change this in the 3D menu, as this video explains (sorry it's in an annoying language!)
Hi Andrew,
The BBC tell you to set to side-by-side, and that is how the image appears without the glasses, so with the glasses on I see the correct image, and it is in 3D. As I said this happened with the tennis, where the players' heads appeared to be 'above the set, ie not there. I can't check if the same happens on Sky 3D as I don't have a subscription. BTW everything I've described is through BBC HD channel 169 on Sky.
Very odd, but not having a set here to replicate the problem, can't really advise further. Wasn't even aware the Olympic tennis was in 3D!
Anyone else able to advise?
when you see the two images split into two, just press the 3d button on the remote control and select side by side and then suddenly the screen will merge together and become a bit of a blur, turn your glasses on and you will have proper 3d. you should'nt have heads cut of etc.Are you sure you have'nt pushed zoom or something
Sorry I should have said - it was the Wimbledon tennis. Hyettdman - I'm seeing 3D OK, but when I switch from 2D to 3D the image definitely zooms in, hence the loss of heads. I've tried all of the picture sizing options to no avail. I'm going to ring Samsung tomorrow.
Does the Samsung have anything like " Picture Overscan" ie: a slight zooming of the picture to remove artifacts from the edge? Maybe this is confusing the 3D.
An update, if I may. Phoned Samsung - first suggestion was to reset the TV by holding 'EXIT' on the remote for 30 seconds. No joy. Next call they suggested it was a Sky HD box setting. Sky said everything in order. Next call to Samsung - a firmware update. Still no joy. So they're sending an engineer out tomorrow.
Incidentally Sky 3D are broadcasting the Olympics from Eurosport in 3D even though I'm not subscribed to 3D (channel 217).
I will post back when the engineer's been.
Definitely something strange going on there. I watched the opening ceremony in 3D via Virgin TiVo on my (older) 40in Samsung TV and didn't experience the problems you describe. Let us know what the enginer says.
Are you sure that it isn’t the glasses that have the problem? I am not a big fan of Samsung but I will admit that their software is pretty solid. Maybe it is the active glasses that have the problem. I have a friend that found active glasses really uncomfortable. He eventually changed his TV to a LG one because it is passive.
Hi guys,
The vendor, John Lewis, arranged for the repair company, Martin Dawes, to send an engineer today. No doubt in his mind that it's a new board that's needed. A call to his boffins confirmed that they had seen the problem on this model before. The TV defaults into zoom mode when the 3D button is pressed. So the TV has gone away for a fortnight (it went away for a similar period when it had to have a new screen panel earlier in the year) and they've left me with a tiny Sanyo flatscreen.
A couple of years ago my old Samsung 32" had to go away for repair (3.5 years into it's free 5 year cover). On that occasion the repair company had a spare 32" Samsung (albeit an older one).
It's a shame they couldn't find you something more equivalent. (Maybe JL could oblige with the loan of a demo set if you moan a bit.)
I have the same problem with my Samsung. I have had one TV replaced and the panel replaced in the replacement. Now this issue has materialised. To say that I am fed up is an understatement. My TV has just run out of warranty; so I know what Samsung are going to say when I call them about this issue. Never again.
