Philips 32 can't calibrate

I've got a Philips 32PFL3605H that I can't seem to calibrate with a THX disc.

Basically I turned off all the auto features and picture correction stuff inc auto contrast and auto backlight etc.

When I get to the contrast screen you can see the tv adjusting its contrast or backlight. It's making getting a good picture impossible!

It does it when scenes change etc to and it's bloody annoying. It's making everything garish and the whites overly harsh. In pc mode however when attached to a source that can be calibrated it looks great so I know the tv is capable of looking good. But my bd can't be calibrated and neither can the games console.

I tried it in pc mode which made things better but you lose all the custom controls so you can't optimizer anyway... Please can someone help me with this? I'm confused after three days of not getting a good picture.
