Panasonic Plasma (65") or Sony 4K LED (65")
English

Hello, I have a Panasonic TX-P65VT65 from JL that I haven't even opened yet, and is within the returns period.  I am a Costco member and just got an email saying that the SONY KD65X9005ABU is going on sale tomorrow at £2760. This is as near as damn it what I paid for the Panny.  Should I be thinking about returning the Panny in favour of the Sony?

A top quality Plasma versus a 4K LED?  If it helps decide then to be honest most of my content is simply via Virgin Cable TV, with maybe some DVDs thrown in.  I don't even own a Blu-ray player, but when I do I doubt I'll have a huge library.

I also have a seperate amplifier / speaker set-up, so the audio side of things isn't really a consideration.  Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Firstly, you are within 28 days, so can put a price match request to John Lewis using this shop:

http://www.totaldigital.biz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=43_112&products_id=4840

So that makes it £2479.

Realistically, are you anticipating using 4K feature? Will you be joining any online services like Netflix or Lovefilm? Sky will launch 4K in the future, but I don't think it will be this year.

Yep, a price match sounds good using the online form here:

Have you read the reviews? Black levels are with the Panasonic. Sony is good though, I have seen it loads of times.

This WHF review sums up the Sony nicely though:

It has a few issues. The issues with the Panasonic is slight fan noise, but this can be fixed by John Lewis if you ask them to.

I would stick with the Panasonic (I think).

If you live near Leeds, you may be interested in this, which may help your decision:

HDTV Test rates the Sony as best in class (among 4K TVs):

That Leeds event would certainly seem to address the question that I (and presumably others) are asking, but unfortunately is too far away from me in Scotland.

I wonder how much of the comparison will represent the "real world"?  I doubt there will be Sky or Virgin boxes hooked up, which represents 95% of my viewing time?

@ Gel

I'm aware of the fan noise being louder than some would like on the Panny.  I pretty much dismissed it due to me not having the sharpest of hearing anyway, so hopefully won't be an issue.  That said, you mentioned a "fix" for this, which I'm not aware of - can you give me any more details please?

I'm currently into my Panny for £2649 (after already getting £850 on cash-back).  I don't know if I can use the cash-back facility more than once, but the trouble I had previously was that any retailer that stated online "in-store only" would only be matched by the lower price plus return mileage at 40p a mile.  Staying in Scotland and applying these rules makes it harder to get a deal, but if anyone knows of a retailer offering delivery for less than I paid then I'm all ears.  Getting a few bob back on the Panny would make the decision a lot easier.

Some notice the fan noise and some don't. I didn't originally but then I did, so I had it done. You just tell John Lewis your TV is producing a loud fan noise and then they send an engineer around. They just take the back off and separate the fan from the edge of the TV with a sticky piece, that's all it is.

Yep, you can make another price match claim, you can make as many as you like.

Yeah there is slight fan noise I hardly notice it now.i think it's the air passing through the air vents rather than the actual fan making the noise.

gel - how long the Panasonic repair guy take when doing the fix? I really don't want anyone messing with this thing.do they just attach some foam strips to the fan blades?

About half an hour, it is really easy, it's just unscrewing the back that takes long.  The fan gets unscrewed off and then the strips go in and then the fan goes back on - simples.

Just to add; Total Digital has a physical shop, and John Lewis has price matched with Total Digital in the past. Worth a shot; at the most they will reject your request.

Sky is currently working on offering 4K services:

I'll tell you my position; I usually keep a TV for 5-7 years, so I'm planning to buy a 4K TV soon.

I'm trying to stay positive with the whole 4K thing but with nothing on the horizon except bigger and cheaper 4K screens with nothing to watch I'm getting bored with it already.i wouldn't trust Netflix, virgin or sky with anything to do with 4K.

at the moment there HD isn't even 1080p never mind 4k

ive watched a lot of reference blu rays since last October on the calibrated ZT BUT it's the tv shows that are winning me over Green Arrow,Bates Motel ,Game Of Thrones ,The Folowing and True Blood just look AMAZING in 1080p I'd love to see the mess Netflix are gonni make with this 4K streaming lark .its all well and good for the casual viewer but for those who want the best picture quality in the home environment it's gonni be a long long wait .
