black outs on Toshiba WL768

I have been experiencing picture blackouts lasting 1-2 seconds every few minutes while watching BBC HD on my Toshiba WL768 TV. Other HD chanels are perfect.

Calm down - no reports of any effect on Panasonic sets. Some mention of picture issues on some Samsung TVs, but we're looking into that.

Well I can confirm that so far no problems with my kit. Panasonic TH-50PZ70B fed HD signal by Sony SVR-HDT500  Freeview HD PVR with HDMI Resolution set to Auto. [although it is possible to select from 576i/576p etc right up to 1080i/p] In auto mode it sends out the highest signal that the connected  tv will accept starting at 1080p.Would be interesting to know,How you have got the Digital Stream Set up Prof Hat.

What a mess for weeks the BBC said it was Sonys problem, Sony said at first there was no problem then said the BBC "was just testing", then Sony say we are working on a fix but have no fix date. All this time set users have to put up with the problem... nice

Sony have put out at least 2 firmware updates since the problem first showed itself. Did the updates solve the problem no.

All in all a very poor show from both Sony and the BBC

My dealer has told me if the problem is not fixed in 6 days I can have another set.

I now have a 40 LX903 what would others choose to swap it for Plasma, LED, LCD any make but Sony

The new set must have 3D and can be upto 42" size.

The picture from by Sony is actualy very good so the new set must be as good

Digital Stream works just fine - I have mine manually set to 1080i (as most programmes work best in this mode on my TV), but I know others have theirs set to Auto, which does the same as yours in terms of resolution output, and they have no issues either.

Can anyone advise, by name, which programmes have been broadcast in 1080p? Whenever I presss the information button on my V20 remote I'm informed that I'm watching 1080i 50Hz.

Are certain programmes only broadcast in 1080p on Freeview HD, while Freesat transmissions all remain 1080i?

Thanks for the info prof,it does seem that it is only affecting sets with inbuilt tuners then? Just thought I"d mention one thing I have noticed though. While watching sd through the Sony, certain programmes ie Dads Army bbc2 last nights dylan programme on bbc4 and  Peter Kaye on Channel 4hd came up in 4.3 not 16.9 that I have set it to.obviously I can alter the aspect ratio on the pana to suit, but still find this strange. When watching sd on the pana without the sony feed ,the picture fills the screen. Any ideas on this from your point of view.cheers Rod

Yes. Satellite transmissions remain 1080i

Cheers Dave.

That's a shame.

Is there a technical reason why Freesat don't transmit programmes in 1080p where possible? I can't think of one.

That said, in a few months Freeview HD will be available where I live, so I'll be able to compare the two (assuming BBC are still broadcasting programmes in 1080p by then).

They may not have sufficient capacity on their current transponder (since they leased their  spare capacity to ITV just before xmas) and secondly i dont think any of the 1st gen Freesat HD boxes support 1080p, nor do Sky+HD boxes.

Though personally i think their time would be better spent addressing current issues like broadcasting @ 1920 x1080i, instead of the current 1440x1080, the low bitrates and broadcasting HD in DVB-S2 rather than DVB-S instead of 'experimenting' with 1080p

Good point. I've no idea if the intergrated tuners in my Panasonic V20 can reproduce a 1080p transmission. If they default to 1080i, the discussion becomes redundant (at least from my perspective).

RE: TVs and projectors

I think the way to deal with this problem is to

A) make sure to keep telling your dealer the set is not working on BBC HD

B) get the message out to other forums that Sony TV's suck on BBC HD freeview

It really is the dealers problem if the set does not work and it is up to the dealer to deal with Sony

If the set was bought using a credit card then section 75 protection may apply to the sale
