hitachi 42pd5200 hd connection help !

can anyone help me ? i have a hitachi 42pd5200 plasma which i bought a couple of years ago before the hd ready boom. the tv resolution is 1024 x 1024 (not the needed resolution to be hd ready) i want to buy a hi def dvd player and connect it via my dvi input on the tv. my question is will it work at 720p / 1080i or not at all, i dont want to waste my money also there is no mention in the manual of  hdcp copy protection so again does it have it or not ? any help would be great
