well I've finally run out of space...
As a concession to my long suffering wife of 30 years, I keep all our LP's (probably about 600) out of the way in the cupboard under the stairs. As and when I want a LP I take it into the front room to play. Over the weeks, these accumulate in the front room until my wife complains, and I go about putting them all back again under the stairs, and start the process again. Anyway, with the imminent arrival of the Xmas tree for the front room it was time to shift my pile of old 70's prog LP's back."Why don't you just put them straight in the dustbin?" was my wife's helpful suggestion
. With the acquisition of a few new and 2nd hand LP's over the last couple of months, the inevitable has happened and I've now reached the absolute limit to my storage situation. It was a real struggle to replace ZZ Top's "Tres Hombres" in its rightful position. "Your Cliff Richard LP's are going to have to go" was my equally helpful response to my wife.
The bottom line is that probably my next hi-fi related purchase wont be of the black vinyl kind, or electronic bits and pieces, or similar, but probably something made of wood and involving shelving. "Those LP's are going in the front room over my dead body!" said my wife. "I think that can be arranged" I replied.
Happy days.

Don't worry, my wife and kids all enjoy the hi-fi, its for all the family as it should be. Our PC is plugged into the Marantz so someone or other is always listening to Spotify or Youtube etc. No it's the thought of all those "unsightly" LPs in the frontroom that fills her with dread. Me, I can't see the problem, I think they look great , especially spread over the floor
Those iCubes look really smart, worth consideration in the New Year. Cheers Chebby.
Finally, when we bought our house many years ago now, one of the "Must Haves" was two living rooms downstairs. The hi-fi in one, TV in the other. A good old large 30's semi with nice thick walls has done the trick and kept the peace for many a year now.
We meet up occaisonally at weekends!

LP's . . . lovely
We also like the idea of the iCubes, probably be re doing the hifi suport/record/CD storage in the coming? summer . . . get rid of the less than ideal book shelf arrangement . . . certainly food for thought?
Old house, thick walls, have a similar arrangement, although we are more in the Victorian cottage style dimensions, 4 rooms down stairs, 12'x12'. Makes me feel almost decadent when one sees a modern rabbit hutch with cardboard walls?

Indeed. They are almost like my Grado's. Lots of leakage.

My garage functions much as your understairs cupboard, DIB. Vinyl is cleared from view in the back lounge every month or so. I've got a few cubes but most of my vinyl is spread out in various locations around the house. (Loft, garage, huge appropriated toy chest, various slots beneath or between existing pieces of furniture).
My wife is a big music fan and tolerates my vinyl collecting, but is keen for our ongoing house extension to be completed in the new year so I can utilise the smaller front lounge area exclusively for my HiFi and records. My thousands of CDs are half uploaded onto hard drives and the rest will be done soon.
That just leaves the court of arbitration to agree on how much vinyl I can display when it moves into its new spot.
On the last count I had just over 2,000 LPs and about a quarter as many 7&12inch singles. So I'd love to have the majority of the albums at least on display. My wife is not too sure about the aesthetic appeal of such an arrangement but I've given the green light to nearly all her design preferences in the new part of our house. So a reciprocal gesture from the one I love may well be forthcoming. You never know!
Ikea Expedit Shelving Unit. No Brainer mate. Double side tape some 60mm wide strips of mdf or whathaveyou on the shelf (hope i dont need to explain where or why, lol). 4 x one icubes storage space for 20 quid. Job done. Ive not had one fall to bits yet.
Floyd over and out.

By arrangement , or accident ?
I built myself a set of shelves out of old pine more than twenty years ago and it held my then 300+ collection of LPs . I also had my HIFi on it so it was all contained in a fairly small space ( speakers excepted , of course) . Now my LPs and CDs are divided between two buildings and I usually can't find what I'm after as none of it is any sort of order . I look forward to the day when I finish the house and can move the whole lot into one building again and have it some sort of logical order .
Good luck with your storage problem ,
Nick

Er , sorry to disillusion you , Charlie , but it doesn't work that way !

What? You mean to say logic, reciprocity and quid pro quo won't apply here?
How strange!

Welcome back Droid some of us have missed you.
Are we not men... no we are devo
Act like men.... not girly-men... some sound as bad as the 'up-to-date- footballers' who dive instead of playing the game.
Give and take guys.... give and take.
Give your LP's their pride of place.
(shhhh, like I do, mine are stored in the upstairs cupboard... where DID we go wrong ?)
Welcome back Droid some of us have missed you.
Why ?,lol.
Wotcha mate, how goes it. About time you moved over to the dark side isnt it
. I may pop in now and again, we will see how it pans out.
Back on topic.
DIB. If you have had a butchers and go down the Expedit route, a couple of things.....
Common sense, although i have seen them sited the opposite to this !!. Have the long shelf horizontal then the upright divider is load bearing.
Buy the 2x2s and assemble as needed. They stack ok. If you assemble a couple but cant fill em, well your wife will plonk nik nacks in the empty spaces, thats a given.
Thanks for all the replies, food for thought in the New Year.
Anyway, I thought I'd wind her up this morning by opening out the sleeve to Monty Pythons Instant Record Collection album, and leaving it in the middle of the floor.
