You have an amp and speakers already, I take it? If so, what are they?

Rega P1 turntable (comes with fitted catridge)  £194

Rega Fono-Mini MM phono stage.  £55

Total £249

Prices correct from Rega's Sept 2009 pricelist.

This will all take about 2 minutes to set up. The cartridge is already fitted and aligned so no 'faffing'.

My ProJect Genie3 & Phono Box MkII were about £240 that leaves you enough change for a Granite Chopping board from Wilco to put it on  - http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/309815.aspx

In this case, yes it is necessary.  The back of your receiver does not have a dedicated phono (turntable) input
