Im not looking into buying one of these any time soon, but I figured if I continue to like and buy vinyl I might upgrade my P2 in the future..

So, I guess what Im asking is there anyone here who has done it, did it work out as expected, was it easy to install etc?

cheers!

Oh I dunno. The thing is there are so many things you can do to a Rega to improve the vanilla performance that this could well turn it into a 500 quid deck or better...

'i've got an early Planar 3, and the anti-skate thingy on the R200 arm seems to have failed, and I also am looking to an upgrade. Origin Live have replacement arms, but where do you stop? Then there's a new motor available, but I'm unsure of how much improvement this would give. I have a Dynavector 10x4 cartridge, so perhaps upgrading to an RB300 would be the way to go? Or an RB251? Moth? Origin Live?  There seems to be a few versions from which to choose, hopefully not too expensive. It's not easy to audition these mods, is it?  Has anyone else gone this route?

A brand new Rega P2 with it's RB251 would probably be more cost effective (and sound better) at £244 and would leave your old deck intact to sell.

A new RB251 is anywhere from £99 to £130 (depending where you buy) and a P3 motor upgrade is £85 (plus it involves some soldering so could cost you more if someone was fitting it for you.) The P3 motor upgrade brings it to P3-2000 level and NOT the current P3-24 standard.

(You would have 3 years guarantee on a brand new deck purchased from a Rega dealer.)

£390 (current 15% VAT price) for a new P3-24 would be a whole country mile ahead of your old Planar 3/R200 and has the option to upgrade it's performance even further with the addition of an optional Rega TT-PSU. (Not an option with your Planar 3 even with a motor upgrade.)

The tungsten counterweight upgrade for the RB300/RB301 is still available for around £50 from Rega and is still the easiest/cheapest counterweight upgrade of all those available.

Thanks for that, Chebby, a new P3-24 is an option I hadn't considered, and would be cheaper than an OL1 modded arm. I'm auditioning a CD5i / Rega Planet on Friday, so it could turn out to be an expensive day!

Out of curiosity - How much difference does a new motor make?

No, mate, the CD player. May be a good deal, what with the recent price drop. Tho I'm wondering about a CD5 s/h instead, for about the same money. Apologies if it look like a thread hijack.

Then you mean the Apollo or Saturn which have recently had price drops.

Slapped arm for me - of course I meant the Apollo. It's been a long day, a cuppa's needed.
