pro-ject rpm 6 sb or technics sl1210?
English

I have read a few reviews of the Technics sl1210 mk2 and was wondering if a modified mk2 or mk5 ,ie new arm and power supply would be an upgrade to a pro-ject rpm 6 sb? Also is the mk5 better than the mk2, and what is the difference??

Re: pro-ject rpm 6 sb or technics sl1210?

Well I think that the forum silence here is mainly due to the fact that we have little or no experience of the Technics SL-1210 range...  There reputation is less built upon their 'audiophile' credentials and more on their reliability and durability for club deejays, the basic theory goes that comparing a Technics SL-1210 to a Pro-ject 6 is like comparing an articulated lorry to a sports car.  One is designed to deliver time after time over a club PA where the finer elements of the music is lost to pure sonic volume... the other has been tweaked around in order to achieve the maximum output it can... this can be reflected in the secondhand price (I do not do new...) where a Technics can be picked up for £150 and the Pro-ject is worth twice, maybe thrice, as much...

.... now, how much of this is fair?  How much is merely audiophile snobbery...? I do not know.  Hopefully not much else what are we all bothering for?  However I suspect that this is why there is scant replies to this question... should anyone know then I, too, would love to hear the answer.

I don't think there is a great difference between the Mk II and Mk V, mainly to do with the pitch control and slightly increased anit-skating force.

The Mk II is a classic and sounds brilliant when set up properly and has shifted millions over the 30 odd years it's been in production (probably more than all the other manufactuers combined) so you really can't go wrong and it is excellent value for money and you will get a good return if you decide to sell it on. The Technics was not designed originally for DJing, this only came about later and most radio stations around the world have used or still use them so they can't be that bad !

An excellent website with all the info you could ever need on the 1200/1210 is here . I have nothing to do with this website it's just very informative and doesn't have any of the snobbery which clouds the issues when it comes to the Technics v "proper" Hi-Fi turntables debate.

Re: pro-ject rpm 6 sb or technics sl1210?

More than one publication recently has reviewed the technics and compaired it to much more expensive turntables. Most recently a rival publication to this fitted a new arm cartrage and power supply, at a cost of thousands and they said that the technics was able to carry the upgrades, which they said was a testa.ment to how well made the sl1210 is. Also I believe a highly modified sl1210( arm power supply mat and isolation platform was on display in Munich at the recent hifi show and recieved great acclaim. I know that a Technics is not known for hifi, and I was sceptical, but after a bit of reading online I became more curious ( do a search). Anyway I am looking for more information before I make a plunge, so to speak.

This is starting to read like i have connections with what im going to recommend, but i will state here and now that i do not. Google sound hifi and then give dave (cawley) a call. He is THE technics man, i would have thought that you may have gathered that from the article you refer to.

If you are quick, http://www.qualitydj.co.uk/technics-sl-1210-mk-ii-p-59.html have SL1210 mkIIs in stock for £300!!!

They are closing down though, but given the deck's exemplary reliability, I don't think that should be too much of an issue...just pay on credit card eh?

The only problem with that is I am an ex pat, now living in Aus in qld. I am iching to have a go with a Technics after what you all said, But is it a side step from a pro-ject rpm6 sb ( of course changing the 1210's arm and power supply), or is it a real upgade??

Who is mr cawley?? I will try that too, but does anyone here know how good the 12010 is compared to the pro-ject?? I have heard great things about the sl1210, but I don't want to spend money for the sake of it if the pro-ject is the same. The pro-ject is not a bad turntable, but I hate the fact it has no lid ( especially in the tropics). Also the bass is a bit bloomy and I have read the the 1210 would solve this?? Simply how good is the 1210, with a new arm and power supply can it outperform my pro-ject?? Has anyone heard both?

Re: pro-ject rpm 6 sb or technics sl1210?

Sorry I missed this post earlier. I went to the site and followed a few links, I had no idea you could go so far with a technics!! I had originally heard that the arm was only ok and the power supply was not very well regulated, so if I went ahead I was going to build a good power supply, which is relatively easy as I build amps for a hobby, so for the cost of a couple of regs a toroidial a few resistors , caps and a box that part is easy, then buy a decent arm. The cart I already have (denon mc). My initial question is it all worth it when I have a pro-ject rpm6sb...Well it is starting to look like it is...
