Old 70's vinyl flat as a pancake, new 180g vinyl warped??
Hi,
I have just started getting vinyl, buying old and new. So far 4 out of 5 brand new 180g vinyls purchased have been warped slightly while all of the old stuff has been flat, perfectly flat to the naked eye infact. I'm not that fussed its just seems a bit off that anything purchased new should be in this state.
All new vinyls have been 12" 180g and mail ordered, but delivered in double skinned record boxes with no sign of damage to the box or record sleeves. Is this a sign of poor QC?? Something I just need to learn to accept if buying new releases??
Noticed the same thing, slight warp in new 180g vinyl. I have some 200g 'Clarity vinyl' pressed single side only 2 discs = one LP, that is warped as well!
The 'cheap'o' pressings, generaly, are flat and sound good.
Interesting experiance yesterday, looking through some old records in an Oxfam shop, the popular and rock music was well scratched, most of the classical vinyl I looked at was pristine . . .

thanks guys.
Haha! My dad has a decent collection of classical on vinyl, mostly shostakovic and they all have decent, solid sleeve with nice inner sleeves and like you say, all the classical stuff in his collection are mint and play clean.
It's because of global warming....

Yup. I've heard we have "Record Global Warming!"
Our HMV has just recently started selling LPs again, but they prop them up on top of the CD racks in a manner that seems guaranteed to warp them after a while.

Must be their warped sense of humour.
Or maybe they haven't flogged them for so long they have forgotten how to rack them! Good to see they are back though.
Where did you buy the records if you don't mind me asking?
rockbox and what records. The other one was a record store through ebay cant remember who, will need to check.
I've taken records back to Picadilly Records in Manchester who were gracious enough to let me try a couple of copies of the same album until I was happy it wasn't warped!
A valuable learning exercise when I first started buying vinyl was not using it as a laptop mat.
ok more moaning from me :)
Has anyone seen a vinyl with severe lateral movement on the grooves, like the spindle hole was'nt central to the vinyl although it is.. I have just got an album I was after said to be in excellent nick by a record store and throws my cartridge/tonearm around like its riding on a crazy zig zaggy train track! I'm surprised its holding onto the grooves it really is that bad!
Side one plays fine so it is down to the pressing on side two only. This is new to me but then so is vinyl in general!
Album is Rush - hemispheres on mercrury records USA..
how common is it to find a record with serious lateral tracking issues. The album mentioned above has about 3/4mm left/right movement and I'm tempted to return it for a refund..
I just started by vinyl myself about 2 months ago when I picked up a Pro-ject Debut SE II in excellent condition for for £30. The records I've bought so far have been the Hendrix ones, which are completely flat, heavy and come with little static as they're in antistatic sleeves - good value for £10 as sound brilliant. The worst I've got is a new pressing Wish You Were Here which is shaped like a fruit bowl and sounds like a Shellac 78, it came with that much static I had to carefully peel my cork TT mat away from it each time it was played - complete rubbish and what's more annoying is that I paid far more for it than any of my others. I've also got an album by Wolf People where the hole isn't central so the tone arm swings left to right as its playing. So its a bit of a mixed bag really!

I have 7 charity shop LP's all bought for £1 and out of those seven, six are near mint! Nothing there worth getting too excited about but some good music all the same!
I will be after some hendrix stuff soon. Already have a couple of rolling stones I picked up recently in nice condition. Again, going back to new release stuff I have two brand new 180g katie melua LP's supplied with CD's which have been packaged in with the vinyl and have marked them leaving an impression of the CD. They play alright so I'm not going to worry too much about them but a little thought would help from some people in the storing of these records!

I have a new record that's also slightly warped. It doesn't appear to affect the sound quality, but it is annoying like you say!
