My first upgrade in three years will be a ...
English

... Fujifilm Finepix X20 and a Mac Mini.

I seriously considered these options in the last few weeks ...

Naim UnitiQute 2 + ATV3.

Creek Evolution 50a + Ruby DAC / FM module + ATV3.

Fujifilm Finepix X100s.

So another year with the Marantz M-CR603 which is fine. (Quite a relief actually, as I really don't want to part with the Marantz any time soon.)

Does the Mac mini have a role to play with the hifi?

No more or less than the slightly elderly iMac it will replace.

At some point you will be drawn ineluctably to the PS3s and you'll wonder why you waited so long.

P3ESRs ?

I'd buy them in a heartbeat (along with the Naim or Creek options I listed above) if I had a few grand more and nothing else to spend it on.

My absolute maximum spend this time would have (just about) got me the UnitiQute 2 + ATV3 option but nothing else.

My only digital camera (excepting the one on the iPhone) needs replacing as it's a bit 'long in the tooth' and the battery compartment door is held on with tape!   Our seven year-old iMac needs replacing because (although it works fine) it won't support Mavericks OS nor any of the latest versions of any photo software I might want to use now. (Aperture 3 or Elements 12.)

Yes, the litte Harbeths would be lovely but so would a lot of other things alas.  I am lucky that I still get the - occasional - chance to do a bit of 'discretionary spending' like this (so many don't),  but I have to be a little more practical nowadays. (Like keeping some back in the bank for 'contingencies'.)  I also want to get back to doing a little more photography as that's fallen off a bit recently (like bits of the old camera). It's also an excuse for more walking and more exercise and less WHF? Forum Smile

Nice camera.

Three years with the Marantz.  All power to you Chebbos. Someone who keeps a component longer than 12 months are a rare animal around here. Continuity breeds happiness.

Chebby

Thanks for the tip, just spent half hour looking the fuji camera up and it is described as having excellent image quality on every review I have read.

Although I wanted wireless, doesn't matter, it is a well priced camera and I wanted something that takes great quality images even if I am not a serious photographer.

I am pretty sure with a bit of patience I will be able to operate it and thank you again later for the stunning photos I will get whilst I am out in the Faroe islands in July.

And just to let you into the secret of why I am going there, G Festival, a 3 day event, and the first solo concert by Greta Svabo Bech.

So, Electro as well, if you are reading this thread, go to You Tube and look up Greta Svabo Bech "Brave Moon" and Picture Book "Sunshine". This woman can sing.

Anyway thanks again for the unintentional tip, I'll post back in July with a couple of pics. Enjoy the music.

3 day event?

Buy a spare battery or two. (One of the only downsides to the X20 is that the battery life is a little low compared to some others.)

FujiFilm NP-50 batteries are about £25 each.

Thanks for that I think I will buy 2 spares as going to a place like that I will probably snap everthing I see, I can always come back to reality and delete the "sillys" once the "buzz" has worn off. But I do not want to be home wishing I had taken more photos.

I still take photos as if I had to buy film and pay for processing!  (With some thought rather than clattering off 100 similar photos of every subject 'just because I canSmile  )

It makes editing easier and means I get home that day with some charge left.

I also use AF-S (single focus) by default rather than AF-C (continuous focusing). I'll only switch AF-C on when it is really necessary.  I would also (given it's got a good one) use the optical viewfinder on the X20 and have the screen switched out.

I leave most of the ' chimping' for when I get home. That can make batteries last longer betwen charges.

If those tips suit your style (and the subject matter) then your batteries should last ok.

EDIT. Image stabilization mode can make a difference too.  Apparently the X20 defaults to Mode 1. (Continuous + motion).  Unless that is essential then change it to Mode 2 (Shooting only). That can also help battery life.

Have you chosen a monitor to go with it?

I'm at 14 years and counting with my amp and speakers at the moment! I added a Sonos ZP90 to it about 6 years ago and a TT which has had minor incremental upgrades (cartridge and platter) but other than that the bulk of it hasn't changed. Not that I haven't wanted to, it's just never been convenient.

Not yet. But I have a couple of hundred in the budget for that.   This Samsung 24" looks the job for not a lot of money.

I have saved £69 already because my local camera shop had a Fujifilm X20 leather case left over from a promotional day last year and are giving it to me free Smile

(I had budgeted for the case, so it is a proper saving.)

Chebby ,

You really need to check out the apple trackpad , it's so much better than a scroll mouse , 59 quid , its 4" square and has all the swipe features for the Mac mini . I use one , and the keyboard with my pro , cos I like to sit the screen futher back on the desktop
