Do You Play Lotto Or Euromillions?
English

I gave up for about a year but have just started again.   I costs me £8 a week to play Lotto and Euromilllions, that is £32 a month!  I think that is a bit crazy but I think I might continue to do it.

Do you play and how much does it cost you?  Ta.

RE: Do You Play Lotto Or Euromillions?

Why do these people agree to the publicity?

Now every single person known to be a member of his family are going to be 'tapped' for cash endlessly by people they barely know or remember and other weirdos and creeps.

It could attract criminals (like kidnappers for instance) and no end of lawyers and accountants and other leeches who want to 'make his money work for him' (work for them obviously) with a hundred and one dodgy but plausible offshore investment 'schemes'.

Who, in their right mind, would choose having their lives probed by the press instead of anonymity?  'Friends', family, colleagues, everyone who claims to know them, however distantly, will get questioned until some 'dirt' about the winner's life emerges whether it's true or not.

If I am ever fortunate enough to have an oak panelled library,  to house my custom veneered Harbeths and Accuphase system, in both my New York apartment and my Sussex manor house, then you guys are still going to see Marantz M-CR603  and Rega R3s in my signature for a very long time to come Smile

Because the most important thing about having £107 million is being able to say "look, we've got £107 million; you must be well jel!"

The winners' existence thereafter (or at least until the money runs out) will be defined by acquiring things with high "jel" potential.

The Lotteries employ their own staff to advise the winners.

You left the endless charity begging letters that arrive in the post. Please donate £5 so that a disabled African can tell the difference between an intruder and his finace.

It's not a blanket comment at all.

I was responding to a post about lottery millionaires who publicise their win. I'm admittedly still making a fairly crude distinction, but I'm certainly not referring to "everyone," or even to all lottery winners.

With regard to the latest winners, I'm sure various television and print reporters were fishing for quotes. At the same time, the winners were keen to announce that the money will be spent on expensive sports cars.

Beyond this, I was making a broad observation about crass materialism. Again, I'm not arguing that everyone in contemporary British culture is shallow and materialistic. I was merely suggesting that success is increasingly defined in term of capital (and little else).

I know Thatcher tried to abolish it,  but surely you mean "everyone in contemporary British society".

Actually, I chose "culture" quite deliberately, as I was thinking about sensibilities.

I guess "culture" and "society" are at least somewhat synonymous and interchangeable.

Both terms now feel too civilised to describe rabid consumerism and neoliberalism. I'll ponder on an alternative. Smile

'British culture' suggests to me a homogeneity that simply doesn't exist (except in the fantasies of a few 'little Englanders') whereas British society always seems to me to be a more optimistic and all-encompassing idea, an 'umbrella' that all of our different cultures can exist under.

If that's a little old-fashioned / idealistic / civilized / inclusive / liberal / pluralist (or whatever) then so be it.  Maybe I just don't share your level of pessimism and cynicism about people.

RE: Do You Play Lotto Or Euromillions?

I fear you're looking for a row, Chebby. (And making many assumptions about my views in the process.) I'm honestly not seeking an argument.

I qualified my use of language above, in stating that I wasn't using homogenous terms; and was in many ways being gently provocative. I honestly have some capacity for nuance of thought; and I'd have to be extremely naive and/or stupid to espouse some flawed notion of a British monoculture.

Surely we can have a reasonable discussion without descending into taunts and accusations. As I've said before, it sometimes feels like you're waiting for an excuse to have a go at me. Picking up on a small semantic point, and extrapolating on this to misrepresent my position, feels more than a little unfair.

I'm also unsure why you do this with some frequency. While I don't have a persecution complex, it's hard not to take it personally, despite your claims to have nothing personally against me.
