There wasn't a happier person in the country when Labour won the 1997 election, I even went to Downing Street the morning after, and was interviewed by CNN singing the praises of Mr Blair. He alone is responsible for my apathy, for my almost nihilistic attitude, so don't blame me for not voting, blame the man you think did such a great job.

I hear you. Honestly, I do.

I loathe Blair for more reasons than I care to list. I also think the two Eds are fundamentally unelectable and lack the charisma and competence, respectively, to run the country.

However, the alternative is a party with a sociopathic commitment to inequality. Its leaders believe with absolute conviction that this is the natural order. This isn't caricature.

Their entire lives (through privileged, cosseted upbringings, education, and every rite of passage) have been informed by this belief. And they will do everything possible to cement their position and re-establish this order. This means systematically dismantling post-war freedoms. Worker rights are being abolished. Civil rights have been greatly eroded (New Labour were good at this, too). The welfare state is being cut back, to the detriment of the genuinely needy. (I'm not even convinced the NHS is safe.) These processes are taking place incrementally, and lost ground is very difficult to claw back. (Try re-nationalising the railways or postal service, for instance.)

So, if the choice is between incompetents trying to do some good and people who are very effective at causing most people profound harm, I'll opt for the former, even though neither prospect is appealing.

Unless of course you believe what they say, I see no evidence that the Labour Party would try to do any more good than the current government.

Well, there is a saying that "the best indicator of future behaviour is past behaviour". Did the last Labour government do more good last time round than the Tories this (or last) time?

Not as far as I can see, but I'm aware from previous threads you have a very polarised view of these things so I have no intention of getting into a debate with you on this issue.

What an odd thing to say. But I wasn't really after a debate; the question may aswell have been rhetorical; it's what you believe that matters. Many governments do some things that even their supporters disagree with, so it can be a tough call as to whether a party did more overall good than bad, or than another party when it was in government. That leads me, often, to deciding which areas matter most to me, and reasoning from there, but that can also make me feel a little queasy.

While not condoning The_Lhc's vitriol or his use of offensive language, I was wondering only an hour or so ago how simonlewis had managed to miss the announcement made earlier today of the death of Clarissa Theresa Philomena Aileen Mary Josephine Agnes Elsie Trilby Louise Esmerelda Dickson Wright.

Not quite a full house but certainly a good try.

edit- and the language shows up on the quote so if this isn't banning material I don't know what is.

I know The_Lhc can be a little blunt, but some people can drive you to distraction with their tedious, and frankly pointless posts.

I'm with The_Lhc on this one, even if he is pushing the rules a bit.

It ain't what you say, it's the way that you say it. You can mention to a footballer that  you don't like the way he slightly pushed you,or you can stick your head in his face and semi nut him.Which is more appropriate.(in the real world)

Not even close to it, if you can show me when I'm ever racist, sexist or homophobic I would leave the forum quite willingly.

That was the intention to be honest, I've noticed that since more people have been calling for stronger moderation the mods have responded and been far more active in the last couple of days, so I was aiming for a thread-lock, just to make the noises stop. If that requires a ban as well then I can live with that.

I find the inane postings of a certain member far more offensive, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

The naughty words do not show up for me in quote thingy. Humph.

But I was hoping when I saw this that there was a bit more political argey bardey to read. Humph, again.
