Simon

If you've got nothing to say about Tony Benn, and want to start another of your [EDITED] RIP threads on someone we've never heard, or cared about, feel free.

I think Tony Benn deserves more respect than you're giving him.

He was principled and honest, qualities distinctly lacking in any modern politician, qualities that I greatly admire. He was ceratinly to the left, too far to the left for me, but we should all mourn his passing, because there's no-one left like him.

Well said.

Ignore the EDITED.

Tony Benn was your archetypal hands off lefty who tried and ultimately failed to bring the Labour Party into disrepute. His nemesis was Tony

Blair who:

1. Won 3 elections for Labour

2. Repealed clause 28

3. Built dozens of new hospitals and schools

4. Reduced hospital waiting times

5. Introduced the minimum wage

6. Intervened successfully in Bosnia and Sierra Leone

Benn achieved exactly what?

I was referring to the EDITED of distaste felt when people are being disrespectful. Did you interpret it another way?

Blair became the antithesis of everything Tony Benn believed in.

I was naive enough to vote for Blair in '97.

Well, yes, that was my point - Benn talked a lot and achieved nothing, Blair did the opposite.  I've been left wing all my life and would never dream of voting any other way but really, the only left wing politicians who achieve anything are those who recognise that you have to take the country with you. Blair knew this and succeeded , Benn didn't and failed.

I'm certainly not going to get into a political argument  with you, but there are counter-arguments to most of those so called Blair achievements.

It depends what you class as achievements, but I would say that Tony Benn's biggest achievement, and the thing that I most respect him for, is that he stayed true to his beliefs, and he was always honest, both things in which Mr Blair failed.

Blair sought privilege, Benn rejected it.

Tony Benn is the clear achiever in my book. A good man

When Benn's Bristol constituency disappeared, rather than subject his controversial views to a marginal constituency, he opted to being parachuted into the safe Chesterfield seat - principled or the actions of a practiced politician?
