Vladimir Ashkenazy/RLPO

Just got back from seeing the great Ashkenazy conducting the Royal Liverpool Phil in Beethoven's 9th. What a night!! To be one of the greatest pianists of all time AND a great conductor is incredible. He is such a wonderful Beethoven interpreter and the RLPO were on superb form - very tight and with some beautifully expressive playing, especially from the very strong woodwind section.
Nothing beats the power of experiencing a live orchestra.
Another concert tomorrow night - Ralph McTell. A nice contrast and another very fine musician.

Just listened to a 1976 Decca recording with the very man doing a Rachmaninov piece with Andre Previn conducting. What a small world!
