History of Horror

I enjoyed it - especially the first episode - recommended

Definitely enjoyed, sure I saw the last episode (again) last night on BBC2? (maybe it was bbc4 - it was late and I was tired...)

Just found this on the BBC iplayer. It was tucked away on BBC4 and as far as I'm aware not widely advertised. All 3 episodes are on iplayer now and I highly reccommend catching them before they go.

Are they doing anymore, or just the three?

They appear to have made just three, ending in the mid-70s. Which is slightly odd. As Mark Gatiss expressed his distaste for "Slasher" movies, maybe he didn't want to do the 80s... Shame really.

He did mention there had been some decent horror movies as they flashed a few film covers on the screen, one of them being The Descent if I red all correctly.

It is a shame he didn't continue, as I'd have liked to have heard his thoughts on certain modern horrors. I mean, how can you have the history of horror without mentioning The Thing?!!

I suppose I can understand why they weren't covered. The three programmes did cover the main three eras of horror - things got a little inconsistent and fragmented after the 70's, so you can't really talk in general about horror. But I do feel at least one more episode was warranted to cover the modern classics, along with the rise of Japanese spooky horror, and the more recent rise in quality horror coming out of Europe, particularly France.

Good series, I really enjoyed it and really appreciated his take on the classic Universal films and his obvious liking for the Hammer films as well. The 70s and onwards lose their appeal bar a few for me; Romero's Living Dead series, some of the Carpenter films, one or two others and some which were inventive and low budget (one begatting the other!). As for the 00s, CGI and torture porn do not a great film make.

I really enjoyed this series too. It brought 'Witchfinder General' to my attention. I don't know if you've seen it but crikey, that's a horror film!

With Vincent Price? Yep, that's cool. Talking of him, I like 'Masque Of The Red Death', too.
