Coincidentally my LoveFilm account sent me 'Flags of our Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima' in the same week - and also the same week the two were shown back-to-back on Channel Five.

Anyway  - 'Flags...' good grief, yawn, yawn, yawn. The dullest war film I've ever seen (well perhaps with the exception of the Thin Red Line). I thought the story line about who planted the flag was pointless and I didn't give a monkey's about any of the characters.

But its 'sister' film 'Letters from Iwo Jima' - telling the other side of the story (from the Japanese view), was superb. I'm not a fan of subtitled films but it wasn't a problem here. It was just so much better paced and really explored the Japanese military culture and you cared for these young lads who knew they weren't going to be going home. A totally engaging movie from the start in complete contrast to Flags of our Fathers.

Agreed, Flags is rubbish. I can feel a subtitled films thread coming on though, just for you.

Thirded by me (though I think it's a tad harsh to call Flags 'rubbish'). I found Letters incredibly moving, as well having technically awesome action sequences, with superb sound and picture.
