Re.warranties. My lovely 42 inch Hitachi tv [4 years old] has now got problems with the metallic coating missing from large areas of the screen. The tv is still covered by a 5 year warranty and after contacting the seller an engineer was sent who had a look and went away saying that they would be in touch. 3 days later the company rang and said that they would not be repairing the tv and that if I looked on their web-site they would be willing to supply me with a new 42 inch tv by another manufacturer. Now this is where the problem comes in. The Hitachi set was bought 4 years ago and was a quality 5 star set costing £2300. The replacment set that the shop has offered is a set costing £399 and can be purchased for £299 if buying a stand with it; ie its a cheap budget set and as regarding spec. wise it comes nowhere near my old Hitachi [it doesn't even have 1080 resolution etc.]. Now I don't know what I can expect to achieve here; can I expect a replacement costing around the price of my original tv [I would at least like the same spec.] or am I just at the shops mercy? I think that I would like to be given a fair price that I can choose a new set from the shop but what can I fairly expect. Any thoughts or experiences anyone?

They are taking the mick. TVs have got cheaper, so the replacement may not be as expensive, but it should surely be at least as good

Hi,

I'd expect you to at least get a TV of a similar spec I.E. not less than your current model but possibly more than as features have been added as standard since your original purchase.

A quick read of your agreement should clear things up - it should mention whether the new TV should be like for like at least?

I'd call Hitachi dealer and ask what the current Hitachi equivalent is and it's RRP. Ask if they'd be willing to quote you in writing as it's for insurance purposes then contact the original seller and tell them your findings.

Best of luck.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.
