Shocking lack of effort at RS Holborn
Frustrated with having to wait for the Blu-ray Supertest in the forthcoming edition, I thought I'd pop into Richer Sounds Holborn on the way home yesterday, fully prepared to part with anything up to £400 if the sales pitch was good.
What I got was a guy who didn't even seem to know the existence of the new Pioneer 320 for a start, and when asked if the extra cost over the Panny bd80 was worth it came back with "you'd expect the PQ/AQ to be better wouldn't you?". Well, yes, but I'm asking you for YOUR 'expert' opinion!
The guy obviously had no interest in hi-fi/AV whatsoever - he wouldn't have had to have been a very good salesman to get a sale, if only he'd had some enthusiasm for the job!
Just had to get that off my chest... cheers
Agreed, another reason to use John Lewis and their price match/guarrantee service etc.Juzzie Wuzzie:Before using RS (which I've done often - incl. Holborn) you HAVE to have your mind made up and treat them purely as someone who is going to hand over a box and take some cash. If they were interested in hifi, surely they'd be working in a more upmarket store?
Stack it high, sell it cheap box shifters.
Not that there's anything wrong with that so long as you know what you want, and there's no problem if you need to return kit for whatever reason, but if you want advice and product knowledge i'd go elsewhere personally.
Yep, for sure - have used them before in the "box shifting" capacity when it's suited me before, I must admit. And on those occassions I've been happy enough. But this time... my expectations on getting "advice" were low to start with, but this really was on another level.
What gets me is that last year, when I was unemployed for longer than I care to remember, and was sending job applications off to all and sundry, RS didn't have a suitable vacancy for me (despite several in the London area being advertised on their website at the time). Now, I'm no natural salesman myself by any means, but if this is all it takes...
(For those lucky enough not to have suffered any significant length of unemployment, being a box shifter in RS, or anywhere for that matter, is infinitely preferrable to the mundanity that is being stuck at home days on end).
Hi Margetti,
I was obviously very concerned to read of the poor service you received whilst visiting our Holborn store.
We take customer service extremely seriously so it is therefore disappointing to hear of any situation where we have fallen short in this area. I can assure you that I will be speaking to the manager and his team to try and prevent similar complaints in the future.
If you are still interested in purchasing a Blu Ray player please contact me directly via the below email address and I will do my best to help..

For the avoidance of doubt, I have no issue with RS Holborn (or RS in general) but that is because I am not interested in advice as I've pre-decided.
Update - John has sent me a very good email offering the sales advice I first sought, and the offer of an in-store demo or home trial, so fair do's for that.
