Richer Sounds, Guildford - disappointed
Last week I visited this shop because I had broken my Sennheiser headphones. When I phoned they said they had in stock my current model and the upgraded version.
On arriving there, they didn't have the upgraded version in stock. So I purchased my old model and I was happy. When I opened the package noticed it was lacking the 6.5mm jack plug which fits my amp. So I phoned them and asked whether I could change to Grado SR60. The person I spoke said no they wouldn't exchange the phones because the packet had been opened. I did explain that I (wrongly) assumed the jack plug came with it, like my old ones. He said: "because they are classed as an IPod headphone, Sennheiser no longer supply that model with an amp plug." He also added that Richer Sounds don't stock the plugs.
The following day I had to travel to Guildford again to buy the plug from Maplins.
A similar situation, not headphones, has happened at the Kingston branch as well. I buy a number of bit and pieces when needed from Richer Sounds, but recently, I've found employee knowledge of stock and non stock products mis-leading.
Whinge over. . .
On the in stock/not in stock thing unless you reserved the item its quite possible they were sold between you phoning and arriving at the store.
£5.25 and free delivery
To be fair, the business model of Richer Sounds isn't about enthusiast staff is it? No doubt they do have some, but I would imagine the real enthusiasts work in real, proper, hifi shops.
Andrew Everard:Fair comment on the in stock/not in stock thing, but you can hardly blame RS for something Sennheiser has decided to do, or not do, with its products - well, not unless you specifically asked if the 6.3mm adapter was supplied with those 'phones.
The conversation included what DO they stock and ARE they in stock. I also mentioned to them about being used for PC and for listening with the amp. We also touched on the Grados - this continued in the shop.
As a sales person [not in this industry] you are trained to ask questions, but that seemed a lapse on their part. I was asking all the questions, apart from does it have a 6.3mm jack plug. In the grand scheme of things it isn't the worst thing to happen. Just disappointed they had fallen down on the fundamentals of selling.
chebby:
Cheers, Chebby. I've already purchased one from Maplins (Hi-de-hi, campers). It's a stones throw away from RS's shop.
I know this is after the event, but I would argue that since you said you wanted the headphones for other uses which would need the 1/4" jack, that the ones sold were not fit for purpose. Furthermore, you would not be able to see that until you had opened the packaging. I took some car mats to Halfords today, without the packaging and got my money back as I argued they did not fit properly and I could not know that unless I removed them from their packaging.
I have also had a play with my various jacks and found that the Grado 1/4" one fit everything, even over the screw on AKG. But the screw on AKG does not fit on any other mini jack. So the SR60s would be a good buy.
Hi Plastic Penguin,
I was sorry to read you were unhappy with the service you received at your local store.
Without knowing which store you visited, and the date of your visit, I'm unable to investigate exactly what has happened on this occasion. It may be the case (as has already been mentioned) that the headphones referred to on the phone had sold out whilst you were travelling to the store. However, I agree our sales assistant should have offered to reserve them for you to prevent this from happening!
I would also have expected our sales assistant to have been more flexible under the circumstances with regards offering an exchange, and I again offer my apologies that this was not the case. Of course, if you would still like to exchange your headphones then I would be more than happy to arrange this.
Going forwards, please would you let me know which of our stores you have visited so that I can take this up with the team concerned?
Meanwhile, please do let me know if I can be of any further help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Many thanks,
John Clayton

John - the title of the thread says it's the Guildford store yet you say "Without knowing which store you visited"... ?!

Thank you for replying. As the titled clearly states: I was a little disappointed that sales staff did not ask the relevant questions. We had a discussion both on the phone and face-to-face about the Grado SR60 and: "I'm looking to mainly use them for the PC along with my amplifier." So I was a little peeved they didn't bring to my attention the Sennheiser lacked an adapter for the amp.
If you want to send me a pair of Grado's they'll be gratefully received, but it's not worth you slappin' wrists.
Hi Plastic Penguin,
Thanks for your reply, and for the additional information.
It's no problem at all to exchange your headphones; please would you e-mail me at john.p.clayton@richersounds.com with your contact details and I will get this arranged?
Thanks again,
John Clayton.

Thank you, John for your kind email.
I suppose when it comes to upgrading my amp I'll have to consider Cambridge. . . .yet another brand to ponder
This morning received my spare adapter with some vouchers. Thank you John.
