Rochester Hi-Fi. Do not set foot in there unless you wish to buy something. Browsing is looked down upon in my opinion. Needless to say, I wont be going back, or recommending it to anyone, not even my worst enemies.
Why? what happened? exciting!!!
He told me to buy an Arcam DiVa DVD Player and Receiver. And also, generally made me feel very uncomfortable in his shop, and feel like browsing was a crime.
Sevenoaks in Epsom is very much the same experience.
My usefull posts How To Calibrate Your TV
sevenoaks in bromley is fantastic. really friendly, happy to demo and don't make you feel like you have to buy there and then.
My local specialist is called English Audio (Hereford, Herefordshire). The business is really really awful. I have been in occasionaly over the years and admittedly have purchased some items at the low end of the market. I have also asked some stupid questions (but you have to start somewhere). They come across as very snooty and treat you like an inconvenience. I felt that because I didn't have a big budget I was just a waste of time.
Now I have a little more spending power than before I decided to travel 50 miles and found a welcoming shop who answered all my questions. I ended up spending £2100 on new kit. In this day and age it is very short sighted to treat new customers like this and they will not return!!
So who's the good retailer...?
Audio Editor, Gramophone
Oh, should of said S.M. Spain in Bromsgrove, excellent!
Do you not think much of Arcam then, or are you referring to his manner?
The Listening Rooms on Old Brompton Road, London were very nice and helpful with me. Bought my Dali speakers from them, chap called Paul. I'd use them again without a doubt.
Superfi near Camden were also excellent, would definitely go back. They're good value and nice. No pushy salesmen here. Though not all the same league of equipment as each other, it's horses for courses.
JVC DLA-HD1 -- OPPO BDP83 -- ARCAM AVR600 -- DALI Helicon 800 Mk1 -- BK Monoliths FF and DF
Is that in the 3.10 at Ascot?? lol (sorry Will I could not resist it)
Mate, I'll take that hoof out of my mouth now.
I've found most of the stores I've visited in the last few years have been great.
Superfi in Derby seem to be nice and laid back in their attitude. Very pleasant experience.
Richer Sounds in Sheffield. Very helpful, but you know they're there to make a sale, if you know what I mean. Not pushy, just more keen to make the sale.
Sevenoaks in Sheffield. Always very good. Last time I went in to buy a cable and the salesman was trying to get me to buy a Denon DVD-1940 (arrived that morning apparently). First time I'd had the sales patter there. Needless to say I hung fire for the WHFSV review and was glad I did.
Moorgate Acoustics. I think they're in a price league above what I'm willing to spend really, but when I've popped in with questions, to buy cables, or to buy a turntable cartridge (my lovely Rega), they were always very helpful.
The Superfi in Sheffield closed down a few years back, but a fella I once worked with at the local rag knew the manager - and also the salesman who used to fall asleep in the listening rooms. In the middle of a sale... That takes some doing. I was always curious whether it was a certain type of music that sent him to sleep.
Interesting Post, I first met this chap many weeks ago when I was looking after the shop for the owner. He came in and told me he wanted to buy a set of Q speakers and told me the price he could get them on the internet. I said I could not match it and to buy them off that company as it was a very good price (not for me to sell speakers or as he was asking give them away)
he came back some weeks later just looking and the owner was in and he said he would match the price ( he still did not buy them)
he came back again a few weeks later and I was in he asked what the best price was on (leema audio equipment) about 3k a box was a guess
tried to work out how we had moved from Q speakers to Leema
said he had a dem the day before.
not selling Leema from what he said, the most we could work out was Arcam would be a good buy for him and more to his budget based on what he said.
he was offered a very good deal on Arcam equipent which he did not see keen on, I asked when would he be interested in buying anything?
he then said a few months time when he had moved ect ect ect ect
I know the owner of the shop and many other shops Walrus Guildford audio The Emporium Sounds of Music
Rochester hi fi is no different it listens to what the customers say and from that says what might be right to buy of course after having had a dem with your cds and might even need a home dem
the way Richard has described how he was treated is not how I saw him treated.
having spent the last 35 years buying lots of kit
and having been in shops when others are buying, i did not see him at anytime come across as nothing more than a window shopper, something he himself proved when asked if he wanted to place a deposit as I heard him say he had no dosh (yet in a post he said he had £500)
why he has said what he has I do not understand ?
The Leicester Sevenoaks have been more than friendly and helpful for my latest purchase.
