HMV
Last week i ordered a cd and a dvd from hmv online. When the cd arrived a few days ago the case had a small crack on the back and the little noggin inside was vertually non existant, with the cd rattling about inside,ok i thought it happens now and then,cd was ok,what the hell, ive got loads of spare cases.
Dvd arrived today and guess what, yeah thats right i took the cellaphane off and the case nearly fell in half with a big split down the spine and the disc rattling about inside.
I buy a lot of music and film online form play, amazon et al,,and never had a problem, but the first two items i bought from hmv..and the last,i might add i get shoddy cases..I dont know how they store their merchandise, but this is poor.
Any one else had this...

I order most of my stuff from HMV and have never had any damaged casings etc. When I used to order from play.com I was getting broken cases on nearly everything I bought from them.
if you log on under help there is an email address you can email to request new cases and they just post them out to replace the broken ones
Don't you think that the price HMV charge in their high street retail chain is absolutely shocking (the online store prices are a lot better). I would never buy anything from their shops as the prices are extortionate (even compared to other high st retailers). No wonder they are having problems in the current climate.
agree with that - buy all my cds from bangcd these days - plus get 10% cash back through giveortake and they quite often have new realese on for £4.99 a couple of weeks after realses - makes it like £4.50 an album
I have been buying all my cds second hand, from amazon marketplace, for the last six months. Ridiculous prices, especially for older stuff. I bought 22 albums last weekend for £40. So far, i've had no problem with disc quality or discs not turning up.

Don't agree entirely there, I was in HMV Oxford St. the other week (before the "Sales" had started) and they had loads of "affordable" CDs from about £4.00 + lots of other promotions. In my view, yes they can be seen as "not cheap", but they also have huge overheads to pay etc etc VS online retailers such as Play or Amazon.
Never had a problem with broken cases from HMV online but have had a few from Play.
Prices online will almost always be cheaper with far less overheads to worry about.
HMV is mostly rubbish these days. Most of the stores don't have anything that isn't mainstream and there is very little expertise on offer from the staff. Even in the big cities they have mostly condensed specialist sections. For example, Manchester used to have a superb classical department. They then moved the jazz in with it and, later the folk and world music as well, leaving less and less space for classical stuff.
Even in the main Rock and Pop section there are always significant omissions and anything off the beaten track is rarely on offer. Ask about anything non-mainstream and you mostly get a blank face followed by a database search and a shockingly high price quote, IF they can even get hold of the item.
Amazon is in a different league I'm afraid and that is where pretty much all my stuff comes from these days.

I've done that for ages too. No plans to change. I only go elsewhere when i really have to.
Tho really, we're spoilt these days. When physical stores were still big news and CD was in its element, we paid a lot more. But that was when most of us only had dial up interweb too.

But then you have the choice to order stuff they dont have in, dont you?

Yes, but when I've done it in the past its taken absolutely ages and been expensive, and the whole point of going to a record shop is being able to browse at interesting stuff, not the same bland range of chart albums over and over again.

Completely agree with you Matthew. I love going to independent record shops (the few that are left). Its like a breath of fresh air. I'm lucky coming from Cardiff, an independent shop is still open and going strong - Spillers records - where they claim to be the oldest record shop in the world. Fantastic place. These days, though it has its own website and have a diverse selection of music on both compact dics and good old vinyl at very competitive prices. If you don't live locally, they have a website which I would thoroughly recommend. Pity there's not more of these around.
bought my first thing from HMV online a few weeks back - There Will be Blood for a fiver. Package was open when it arrived. Thanks to the honest Postie for not nicking my DVD. (or perhaps he's not a Daniel Day Lewis fan).

I use a good specialist in Bolton as well, called X Records/X Compact Discs. They are very good and carry a good range of stuff. I don't mind paying slightly more to support them because there are too few such shops around now. Sometimes Amazon is more convenient but there is nothing more enjoyable than browsing and picking out a couple of discs in a proper independent record shop.

Have ordered a few things from HMV online and not had this issue so I'm guessing you've just been unlucky (or I've just been lucky - who knows?!).
