Frank Harvey Hi-Fi Excellence
I would like to publicly say thank you to Frank Harvey Hi-Fi, and in particular Kevin, for their advice and professionalism. I have been looking for some while to mate Hi-Fi and cinema together and Kevin convinced me of what I knew to be true. Separate systems are the way to go.
I ended up blowing all my budget on a cinema only set up, but what a set-up!
After what must be the shortest demo I have ever had I was convinced that the system they proposed was the right one.
All equipment was delivered when they would said it would be. Just waiting for the PJ screen, then I can put the sheet back on my bed.
I would highly recommend these guys.
What did you go for scowl?
I ended up with:
SC-LX82 AVR
BDP-LX52 Blu-ray
JVC DLA-HD550 (after seeing Panasonic AE4000, good though it was the 550 was noticably better even to me)
M&K Sound LCR750THXs on the front, MT4 on rear, SB1250THX sub (after demoing B&W MT-30, B&W XT8, Spendor A5/A6, ProAc, PMC, Neat).
That sounds like a brilliant home cinema set up.
Enjoy.
I found them to be excellent with customer service as well. Thumbs Up.

Thank you. If I can decode the '82s instructions I'm sure I will. Somewhere on this blasted remote there must be a button marked "for idiots".

What did the pioneer sc-lx82 sound like with the B&W XT8 and B&W MT30?
Thanks

The MT30s about what I was expecting. Not unpleasant, quite punchy on movies but a little thin overall. They seemed to locate sounds very well and of course the sound was very consistent front to back to side. Ultimately though it seemed a bit stressed rather than effortless. This may not be a good reflection on their abilities as the demoer (not Frank Harvey Hi-Fi) didn't put a lot of effort into this set up. As a lounge friendly system they were fine.
The XT8s / XTC / XT2s were a disappointment. I was really hoping to like these so I could combine music & movies. Spit ! Imagine a phlegm filled surly teenager after three days on job experience. No heart, no enthusiasm and any words you could elicit from them were congested and mumbled. That was the XT8s. No life, no punch, voices stuck inside their (admittedly very nice) boxes. When listening to music my foot didn't tap once.
If I had to choose between the £1600 MT30s or the £4k XTs. I would walk away £2400 heavier, sell the MT30s and buy MK Sound instead.
As you can tell I don't know much about Hi-Fi so my answer is probably wanting.
Right. I'm off to the dunny to read the 'LX82 manual.
Thanks Scowl.
That was an excellent description.
Thanks for that.
I also agree that Frank Harvey provide an excellent service.

Did you manage to decipher your remote Scowl? It's worth perservering. Although like all modern amps its not immediately apparent what to select and why. I think i went through that small pain barrier with the LX81. If I can help let me know.
barnsleydave,
Thanks for the offer! As always you never know if you're maximising the sound of the equipment. I've done the auto MCACC setup but think there is more to come. Some movies are stunning, some less than I was expecting. I'll give the speakers a few more days use to bed in and then I'll do a manual setup just like the good old days.
One reason I popped for a Pioneer AVR is so I can use Kuro link. At my age convenience matters a lot. But on inital set up its a pain in the rear. Uncannily it is doing the exact opposite of what I want. May need help here.
The PJ is brilliant, even presented on a sheet. My 8 y.o. son was gobsmacked by a three foot tall Yoda. Probably taller than in real life.
Come on HiFiX, where's my screen!!!!
It was ordered on the Monday - just waiting - they come from Europe thoughscowl:Come on HiFiX, where's my screen!!!!

Hi
Much appreciated.
We do pride ourselves on the service we offer our existing customers and the many new customers who are visiting our store because of forums like this.
We also try and provide the largest product range possible, continuing to add high quality products to our demo portfolio of respectable brands that people want to hear under one roof. We hope this makes the daunting task of auditioning much easier, especially for those that find it hard to find what they want to audition in one place.
I'd also like to thanks those who have come from all corners of the UK, including Ireland, and even those who have travelled overseas from Europe and as far as Australia (!!) to take advantage of our demo facilities, product range, and product knowledge. It is you guys who've helped us grow to where we are today (the store and website), so a big thank you is also required from ourselves to you.
Regards
David
