Prices from Dealers
English

I am interested in an amplifier from a well-known brand in the £2k price range.  I rang 5 dealers yesterday to enquire about pricing/availabilty.

I was shocked by the response :

- one said "we never discuss pricing on the phone". ????

- one offered me £40 off RRP as "an Easter special" !!!

- one said he'd have to stick to RRP !

- one said he couldn't quote as his manager had "gone home early" !!!!

- one said he'd have to call me back "within an hour" as his brand specialist had popped out. 24 hours later and still no call.

Was I just unlucky, or is this an indication of why the hifi industry is struggling ??

What is the amp?  And why the secrecy?  It is not as if you have a good deal yet.   Smile

I don't think this is the right way to negotiate. I went  to the dealers for my AV kit, demoed a few kits & then got to negotiating when I decided on mine. This time of demoing & talking to the dealer allowed developing that trust between him and me, & he ended up offering a significant discount without even me asking. Dealers think you're wasting time by calling them, as you're likely to call other places as well. So they don't tend to offer their best deals that way.

The hifi industry will struggle if they started offering discounts on the phone, IMO.

Sales outlets selling items of that valuie will not want to get into a dutch auction with other retailers.

big boss is spot on, pay the dealer a visit , show him you are serious and more often than not he will volunteer a deal without you having to ask!

Just look up the prices online.

If it's Naim, then their new (April) prices apply to anything that has to be ordered in from 1st April onwards.

Demo stock already in the shop can be negotiated but it's best if you are actually there with intent and cash (or cards) ready. That's how I got a great deal four years ago. I was there and I was a known customer. As the previous poster mentoned, I got a better offer than I would have expected without even asking.

"We are currently awaiting the loading of our complement of small lemon-soaked paper napkins for your comfort, refreshment and hygiene during the journey."

To be fair to the OP, he didn't actually say he was trying to negotiate a price, he was just calling to ask what price they were asking ? Also, a lot of retailers will not quote prices on the web or in magazine ads, and actually ask you to call them for their best price.

I agree though that in order to negotiate, it needs to be face to face with cash/card in pocket, so they know you are serious and will buy on the spot if you are happy with the price.

It wasn't a well known Canadian manufacturer was it?
