Musicraft in Derby

I had the pleasure of visiting Derby yesterday on a wet rainy day from London and decided to pop into Musicraft to take  a look at the ATC SIA 2-150.  I got to meet Rick the owner(who is nice gentleman) once again who  had the unit  in stock. I was anxious to go to a specialist to  have a first hand audition  at the SIA 2-150( Stereo Integrated Amplifier,2 for the amount of channels and 150 being the power ouput per watts)

The SIA 2-150 was switched of when i popped in so after chatting with Rick for a bit it was turned on. The case work looks better than the previous version which includes aluminium front panels  which offers minimum control. There is a large knob for volume control, the other for input selector with a central light which turns green  when lit and goes on red when in standby mode.

This amplifier has a massive power supply which delivers class A/B output of 150-watts, a greater fraction being class A.

The ATC amplifier was hooked to the Monitor audio PL100. As time went on the amplifier got warm the sound just got better due to the neutrality of the electronics. It allowed the speakers to perform admirably and Rick was on hand to answer all the questions i threw at him.

Thw SIA 2-150 produced a clean sound which was not aggressive but had bite. It made the PL100 deliver a balanced result due to the dynamics of the electronics. This amplifier has a wide and deep sound stage with good control of the bass. The delivery of the clean sound reproduction by the SIA2 -150 has to be matched mostly by a pre/power amplification. For its retro look similar to my Yamaha AS2000 its a major player in the amplifier market; a true renaissance amplifier.

The end result is a 5 star unit that will last for years to come with a whooping 6 year warranty.

Many thanks to Rick for the the demo and i hope i can one day purchase this unit.

Another thumbs up from me for Rick.  As said, worth travelling for true specialist advice.  Rick offers an intimate understanding of the products he sells and hifi in general, and excellent customer service.  Would definitely use again.

That's nice to hear, folks! We see too much negative stuff about retailers, ignoring the majority of reliable, friendly shops. Although, I wouldn't travel (nothing personal to Rick or David) from Surrey to the Midlands, not because a lack of desire, but due to circumstances at home.

Nevertheless here's a big Yes Wink

Amp; CDP; Turntable; Tuner; Speakers

I have to agree that Rick is a top man.

He sent me a couple of caps I needed for my ATCs for free and wouldnt even take postage costs.

He has given me some great advice regarding amplifiers and Ive had the pleasure of a few long conversations with him.

I am also needing a base plinth for one of my ATCs(long story) and contacted Rick to get a quote. He gave me a very reasonable price and I said I would order it when I had the funds.  A couple of days later I got a call saying it had been ordered and would be with me asap. Square me up when you can!

Now this is fantastic customer service and I havent even bought anything from him!

Keep up the good work Rick. Try and not work too hard! Youll not be a teenager for much longer! Smile

i hear what you're saying pp, i personally wouldn't travel to any other dealer, especially where atc are concerned - it wouldn't be worth it just to meet another box shifter.  i'd put Rick in a different category though, you don't have to talk to him for long to realise he's a true specialist who has a vast amount of knowledge about the products he sells, and hifi in general, rather then a "jack of all trades...".  i live in hull which is a fair distance from derby, but it's worth it for the in depth knowledge and advice.  his customer service is well above the norm, too. Smile

spot on, he's very knowledgeable and doesn't try to convince you to max your budget if it's not necessary.

most dealers i've seen in action seem more interested in separating you from as much cash as you've got, rather then giving genuine advice based on an understanding of what's going on "under the hood", so to speak.

Re: Musicraft in Derby

Id also like to say a big thank you to Rick. I was looking for a cheap amp to improve my setup till I was in a better financial situation to get the setup I really want. I had alot of great advice from other members but after a lengthy conversation with Rick he advised me of the NAD C370. With the option to add a power amp later, I liked the sound of it so decided to take a punt as it would have to be without audition. I figured there was no way it would be a backward step from my Arcams.

I recieved the amp yesterday and havent had a long listening sesh yet but first impressions are great.Extremely powerful and musical. This isnt the thread for a big right up on the amp but I'd like to thank Rick for his help and suggestion. Im an extremely happy camper!

Jobs a good 'un!

Hi Fowler

Congratulations on your choice of speaker which has obviously been backed up with some good research.

I expect by now you have  the 40's  rigged up and singing sweetly although its early days yet.

I see you are powering them with a Primare i30 amp and I also have this amp and will be demoing this combination next week.

I would be most interestd to hear your comments on how they sound together and how the ATC 40's look to you now they are in your home( as it has been said they are a bit 'bulky')

Perhaps it would be better to reply on the HiFi part of the forum as it may be of more interest there.

Thanks for your thoughts as may help my decission next week

Cheers

Much happier now to hear that i30 and ATC 40's go well together. You need to relax in your own home  for a few hous to get the best idea if the combinationis right for you.

Glad that you got good sound advice before buying. Its not always avilable these days but Rick sounds like an ATC specialist!

Re: Musicraft in Derby

Today I went into Musicraft for some advice and regarding the MA speakers I'm getting from Rick. Firstly before I start a big thank you to Rick as well as well informed unbiased advice he is always willing to help and back up what he believes in.

I went in today and Rick intoduced me to the Yamaha Z11 we spoke about it for a while then he fired it up...... and boy did it fire up! Indifferent The Z11 really makes sound feel like its coming from everywhere if people don't believe in the "sound field" then they really need to listen to one of these.

We were watching Master and Commander (in 5.1 NOT HD) and I honestly felt like I was on the ship it felt like water was swaying around me. I often heard that when using a Yamaha the speakers disappear off the wall and I found that hard to believe. However this is exactly how it felt. I couldn't tell you for the most part where sound was coming from it was just coming at me from all different directions. In my mind this is what makes it fantastic although we watched 3 scenes I was by no means engrossed into the movie, but the sound was so amazing and consuming i felt like i was standing on the ship it totally gripped me and made me feel apart of the movie.... This is something I have NEVER experienced before.

Having said that the sound was crystal clear and Rick didn't even have all the speakers connected. He had the Monitor Audio Platinum centre and the floor standers as well as the bookshelfs at the back and its hard to imagine that the ATC could be better.

When the cannons and guns fired it felt they were coming at me and in a weird way I felt inclined to duck or move out of the way. No I wasn't drunk nor do I drink but I really hope people understand what i'm saying. The most extraordinary bit was when the actors are in the lower part of the ship and people are walking above it really really really felt as if someone is walking on the floor above on Ricks ceiling it felt so incredibly real.

Vinny7 or anyone that has doubts please give the Z11 a look it really is all that and much much more everything sounds so crisp and sounds so "natural" as Yamaha say but there really is no other word for it.

Lastly a very very and i mean VERY big thank you to Rick. An extrodinary bloke that can be relied on and trusted and if you have a difference in opinion then he is the kind of person that will respect that. His room is excellent although people might think "oh well he doesn't have a demo room"..... Believe me i've been to a few and Ricks Musicraft is amazing. Why i hear you ask.... because its set up how you would set up your equipment at home so your not buying something you can't replicate at home. What you hear in shop can be replicated he's not selling you a con sound like other retailers i have been to.

Its clear to see Rick has a huge knowledge when it comes to Audio and Visual equipment and he is honest. To the point he even recommends things that he has no affiliation with if he believes there is a superior product out there or someone is being sold something he believes is a lot of hype and not much more.

Would I ever go back to Rick....... Without a second thought he always tries his best for his customers and that is self evident in previous threads. Always welcoming and willing to help and perhaps most importantly unlike other people he doesn't copy and paste other people's words what he says he believes in and you won't hear Rick be hypocritical. All this makes Rick one of very very very VERY few genuine people out there that are not there to make a fast buck but to help customers and show what can be achieved with AV equipment.
