Anyone used powerdirect.co.uk ?
English

Anyone used powerdirect.co.uk before? Or any idea where they source their goods from?

I am interested in buying this DAB radio / iThing lightning dock as at £77 delivered it is £13 cheaper than anywhere else.

That possibly seems too good to be entirely legit. The company seems appropriately registered, has a bricks and mortars address (not far from me in Bolton, although bizarrely they still want a £7 fee for collection the same as postage) and claim to be an approved distributor of Sony products.

Thanks BB, very helpful. Too many recent bad reviews for me to bother, although that doesn't answer the question of where they source their goods. Hardly consistent with being approved retailers for the various companies they list though. I think I'll give this a few weeks to see what the reviews on the product are like (it isn't even listed on the Sony website yet) and maybe see if the amazon price changes.

Thanks again  Smile

Maybe you could just drive up to Bolton & buy it directly from them?  :?

Yes I'd seen that, and their main / home store is the Bolton one. It's not far from me and I drive more or less past it when I work in Bolton. But the product is ordered by them once you place an order so there are no greater guarantees of it arriving, and they charge the same fee for you to collect as they do for postage, so you don't save anything. So no point that I can see.

Their policies are weird. Why do you need "processing fees" for in-store collection? It's best to stay away I think.

The only reason I can see, and also based on their ordering / delivery info, is that they are effectively acting as a middle man, so it costs them as much to deliver to them as to a customer. But if that's the case then it doesn't make them seem like an approved retailer and it gives me no confidence that the products are sourced from the uk. They say there is a one year manufacturer guarantee, but it sounds like they could be a nightmare to deal with if anything went wrong.

Have you ever tried flubit.com? They may be able to beat powerdirect's price. No harm in checking if they can beat the price.

I tried flubit.com with tarantinoxx boxset. They indeed beat the best price around but I got cold feet / thought it was going to come down in price elsewhere. It didn't and I ended up buying it for more than the flubit price  :? I'm still wary as I don't understand the business model and the site is odd, if not actively suspect. Do you know how it works?

I know the procedure having used it before. I just wondered how they actually achieve the lower prices. I think you or someone else said they had something arrive with another retailer's packaging. But even if this worked with group buying I don't get how they could get such a good price from an existing retailer that they could undercut by a decent margin and still make a profit. Alternatively they could send an order to a retailer and take a referral fee or equivalent, but I don't really see why the big retailers would bother, they'd get the business anyway.

I think they save by making a sale without advertising. There are a number of smaller retailers not having their own website to sell their wares. Maintaining a website costs. My blu ray was delivered by Asda. Obviously, even bigger retailers have an interest in the model. Because you'll never know who is selling you the product at the price (until the product reaches you), their usual sales will not be affected. Something like lastminute.com's secret hotels.

....and that as well (saving on commission and free from restrictions from certain manufacturers). Hmmm.....might get good deals on Sonos then.  :?

RE: Anyone used powerdirect.co.uk ?

Been delving into the Ts and Cs:

'
You should adopt normal internet-advised security measures before buying online.  You should only buy on the Site if you would seriously, without doubt, consider buying from the Seller via its own website or other retail outlet.  You should always keep in mind that despite efforts, Flubit may not be able to fully vet every Seller and you should therefore exercise due care when buying through the Site.  Although Flubit aims to list exact, like for like matches to any web URL they provide as a reference, you should carefully read through the Flub-Deal before purchasing; you are purchasing the product description of the Flub-Deal NOT the website.  You should take the time to read through and understand all polices, including but not limited to, warranty, postage, returns and Seller individual terms & conditions before committing to purchase.' '

It should be understood at all times whilst using Service that the consequent contract for purchase is between the Flubit Users and the Seller. Flubit acts as facilitator of the sale only.'

I don't therefore get your comment about not knowing who the product will come from. According to those terms you would have to know. This site will be fine for CDs and DVDs that either work or are damaged but I can foresee problems with more expensive consumer electronics where there are problems with the product, no-one's going to want to take responsibility as the seller.
