Which camcorder?

Requirements:

Decent optical zoom range

Good image stabilisation

Full HD

Good battery life

Good still images resolution

Budget: £300-350

I've found these so far:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CX410-Full-Handycam-Wi-Fi/dp/B00AWME0NY/ref...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-LEGRIA-High-Definition-Camcorder/dp/B00C0P...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-V520-Full-Camcorder-Intelligent/dp/B00...

Canon has a "baby mode" (not sure if it's only a gimmick) but resolution for still images is low.

Any experience of the above? Any other? puzzled

RE: Which camcorder?

I recently ditched the dedicated camcorder and opted for a bridge camera, have you considered this option ?

I can recommend one of these, the video quality is good, zoom is adequate and still pictures are excellent. Oh, and even an idiot like me can use it too.

I bought a camcorder a few years ago, which i am very happy with, it's a sanyo version of this, very simple to use & full 1080p recording.

I would think about flogging your SLR and buying one of the Canons with the Hybrid AF sensors and a motorized zoom Smile. A camcorder will still give you faster autofocus, but the SLR will trash the camcorder for low light and dynamic range.

(how did the repair on your SLR go in the end?)

I didn't. Bought a brand new EOS 600D for £290 in one of Amazon's lightning deals instead.  Smile

I heard that hybrid AF sensors were quite slow. Aren't they implemented from 650D?

That looks good! Much cheaper too!!! Is there any quality difference between these and the others? Why are they cheap?

Now this has been bothering me for a while. If I sell my entire Canon kit comprising of 400D, 600D, 17-85mm lens, 50mm 1.8 lens & 70-300mm lens, I'm sure I'll get more than £400 which I can invest in an FZ200. Would it be a wise move though?

I am not sure why it is cheaper bb, i would guess that it hasn't got the features of the more expensive models like optical image stabilizer or a super zoom, mine is a sanyo & as a basic point & shoot i am very happy with it, the 1080p picture is of descent quality infact it's very good, it also has mini hdmi out.

RE: Which camcorder?

Ignore my post above, i've just checked the specs & it's got active image stabilizer & a large zoom.

So i'm not sure why it is so cheap.

Yes, it is a compromise.  But the video from an SLR is far better thsn the stills from a Camcorder Smile

Have a play with either the Pancake STM or the 18-55mm STM lens and see if you cna live with the AF speed.

RE: Which camcorder?

I would not choose a 3-400 quid camcorder over a 600D. What are you looking for that you think you're not getting already? Stabilisation?

RE: Which camcorder?

With the baby arriving in November, I want something that's quick to start & easy to operate, even for my wife, so we can catch the milestones. Smile

RE: Which camcorder?

I am 100% serious. It's always there, it's always ready, and all camcorder footage looks decidedly amateur anyway unless you've got a sturdy tripod and a pull focus rig. Combine it with 600D footage and you have the best of both worlds, IMO.

RE: Which camcorder?

I know you're serious. Sold the iPhone last year as wife got bored with it. Can use Nexus 4 / Lumia 920. Just want some good quality videos. I'm not selling my 600D for a camcorder. I have 2 thoughts:

1) Sell my 600D for a bridge camera like FZ200 - for still images, and

2) Buy a dedicated camcorder for superior videos.

How do videos shot on mobiles compare with a camcorder?
