Thunderbirds are gone
Gerry Anderson's work was my childhood. His storytelling, humour and imagination transcended the medium he was so famous for. Could you imagine persuading an 11yo to sit down and watch a show full of marionettes? He was a true great, FAB Gerry.
Still have the pink Rolls Royce and a doll of Captain Scarlet in my toy box. He made every child's dream come true.
Gerry Anderson really was FAB.
A very sad loss - his shows seem to have been with me my entire life and I am old to go back to those mentioned above as well as Supercar (the one before Fireball XL5) and Twizzle and Torchy the Battery Boy both of which he was involved in before even Supercar. RIP Gerry.
RIP Gerry Anderson. You made so many kids childhood FAB!
Ahh, happy days. RIP.
Although, a childhood illusion was cruelly shattered when I learnt that the Thunderbirds, Shado Interceptor etc were not remote-controlled, small-scale rocket- or jet-propelled models but actually 'flew' on fishing line(s)
(Which reminds me, must stop sending birthday and Christmas cards to Destiny Angel...)
Oh I don't know, might be quite sweet for Juliette to have a whole stack of birthday cards waiting when for her she's born in 28 years' time...
Video coverage of Gerry Anderson's funeral here – good to see he was sent off in fitting style...
Fab 1.
What a nice send off to such a great man, RIP.
Like many a huge fan, got to meet him at the launch of Terrahawks, I was so excited and lost loads of cool points at the time but was too great a chance to pass up.
I was so pleased when there was a revival in the early 90's so I could buy all the stuff for the kids and won much respect for knowing more than I would care to admit.
When I was very young I wouldn't eat my mince'n'tatties unless it was in the shape of a Thunderbird.
Thanks Gerry.
A touching send-off, and I agree with all the comments here. Growing up in the 60s, Gerry's programmes were so much a part of my childhood, right back to Fireball XL5. I collected just about all the TV21 mini-albums, which were the only way of having a 'recording' of favourite shows, spent all my hard-earned pocket money on the various Dinky models and eagerly lapped up each issue of TV21. I still remember how UFO seemed to reflect the euphoria of outer space at the end of the decade. Love 'em all and have the DVDs, but the pinnacle for me will always be Thunderbirds.
Incidentally, for anyone (like me) fascinated by the still-amazing special effects in these shows, you can't do better than track down a copy of the late Derek Meddings' book "21st Century Visions". Meddings' team were almost the proto-ILM of their day, and all in a small warehouse in Slough!
RIP Gerry.

RIP just heard this on itv news.
